Brilliantly re-examining the original sources, he argues that there s one over-arching theme giving them a unity - the idea of being 'on the edge', both culturally and geographically.  Say Richard Woods OP: 'Journeys on the Edges provides a valuable antidote to the wishful thinking and misconceptions that bedevil much recent writing about the Celtic tradition. Rejecting the claim that a 'Celtic spirituality' can be constructed out of the sparse records of the first millennium, O'Loughlin incisively and eloquently explores the witness of early Christian Ireland, especially for what it reveals about spirituality today.'","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49508718379281,"sku":"GOR003938677","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49571778724113,"sku":"GOR010383069","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53016906694929,"sku":"GOR002892189","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0232523142.jpg?v=1751456930"},{"product_id":"discovering-saint-patrick-book-thomas-o-loughlin-9780232524987","title":"Discovering Saint Patrick","description":"Superb popular history that undermines many of our preconceptions about Patrick and reveals several surprises. He is taking my space! This place is homely! This room is very impersonal! We need more room! We need to de-clutter! I was lost in the vastness of the hall! I felt locked in and had to go outside! We also know that how space is arranged affects us: we want 'round table talks' and we do not want to be put in the back row! Churchill captured the importance of built space in a couplet: We shape our buildings, then our buildings shape us. And in every society buildings have been used to project power and authority, to regulate society, and to project an image of how that group sees itself. Strangely, we out do not think about this aspect of space when it comes to liturgy - yet every religion (and every Christian denomination) has used buildings as part of their worship: from Newgrange to classical temples to churches build of steel, concrete and glass. And it was this concern of the Second Vatican Council that led to the changes in the arrangements in Catholic Churches in the 1960s and 70s. But this religious use of space - just as with the changes mandated by Vatican II - are little appreciated or understood. This book brings together nineteen Christians - liturgists, pastors, architects, artists - from several churches and from around the world who all try to answer the question of how space affects us in worship. The topics covered include the role of light in a religious building, the need for space to appreciate dance as part of worship, the varying needs of spaces for different liturgies, accounts of how communities have become creative with space, and questions about how the liturgical renewal begun in Vatican II should continue today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49571701096721,"sku":"GOR013426481","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49752265556241,"sku":"NGR9781788126113","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52548922212625,"sku":"GOR013173953","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1788126114.jpg?v=1751153949"},{"product_id":"journeys-on-the-edges-book-thomas-o-loughlin-9781570753374","title":"Journeys on the Edges","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49597821157649,"sku":"GOR003423660","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49709426082065,"sku":"CIN1570753377VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49790918918417,"sku":"CIN1570753377G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50993392451857,"sku":"NIN9781570753374","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1570753377.jpg?v=1750894273"},{"product_id":"explaining-the-lectionary-book-thomas-o-loughlin-9781856076036","title":"Explaining the Lectionary","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49604770988305,"sku":"GOR006510902","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1856076032.jpg?v=1750930971"},{"product_id":"washing-feet-book-thomas-oloughlin-9780814648612","title":"Washing Feet","description":"More than half a century after its introduction into the Easter liturgy, the rite of the washing of feet on Holy Thursday goes to the heart of what it means to take part in Christian liturgy as well as to live a Christian life. But how does one discover its meaning? For some it means programmes like turning out a product, ignoring the individuality of eachs path. Others emphasize the group, forgetting that every communitys richness is valuing its members diversity. Is discipleship the way of the loner and community-ignoring? But social beings learn discipleship in communities. Community is not simply the club of like-minded individuals but should model a new way of being. To uncover what discipleship means, we must read the New Testament with the awareness that how we see the world of the early Jesus followers is radically different from the inherited theological underpinning of many churches. This book takes our historical awareness seriously, and examines what biblical, historical, and archaeological research can tell us about discipleship today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742539948305,"sku":"NGR9780227177372","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50505837379857,"sku":"GOR013976734","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53113080971537,"sku":"GOR014748498","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0227177371.jpg?v=1751389792"},{"product_id":"eating-together-becoming-one-book-thomas-o-loughlin-9780814684580","title":"Eating Together, Becoming One","description":"2020 Catholic Press Association first place award, ecumenism or interfaith relations   In November 2015, Pope Francis called on theologians to explore whether normal Catholic practice should be changed to allow Christians, belonging to other churches, to share fully at the table when they take part in a Eucharist celebrated by Catholics. Thomas O’Loughlin provides his contribution to that challenge in this volume. He argues that the various ways of thinking about what we are doing in the liturgy should lead us to see intercommunion as enhancing our participation in the mystery of the Church and the mystery we celebrate. But what is the best route to follow? In The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy, Thomas O’Loughlin offers a way forward that strengthens faith, builds up Christian community, and points toward a new direction based on liturgical principles that are rooted in our natures as ritual beings as well as in the gospel.  The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy explains why good liturgy is important, how to recognize it, and how to assess liturgy in terms of a larger vision of the Christian life. O’Loughlin, a seasoned theologian and teacher, identifies ten principles that make for good liturgy. Such liturgy must be honest, open, joyful, inclusive, celebrative of community, facilitative of engagement, based in creation, attentive to the marginalized, free of clutter, and true to the pattern of the incarnation.   Since good celebrations build faith and bad liturgy weakens it, these principles promise to bring new life and meaning to every celebrating community.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51008175603985,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008178356497,"sku":"NIN9780814645635","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51695662235921,"sku":"CIN0814645631G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52119757947153,"sku":"NLS9780814645635","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53604686889233,"sku":"CIN0814645631VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53617944264977,"sku":"GOR012325051","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0814645631.jpg?v=1751201739"},{"product_id":"making-the-most-of-the-lectionary-book-thomas-o-loughlin-9780819228277","title":"Making the Most of the Lectionary","description":"What is the point of the Lectionary? It is a detailed account of the sites mentioned in the Christian scriptures, the overall topography, and the shrines that are in Palestine and Egypt at that time. It is neatly broken into three parts: Jerusalem, the surrounding areas, and then a few other places. The whole has a contemporary and lively feel; and the reader is then not surprised when Adomnan says he got his information from a 'Gallic bishop name Arculf'. Things then get interesting for the more one probes, the book the amount of information that could have been obtained from Arculf keeps diminishing, while the amount that can be shown to be a reworking of written sources increases. We then see that Adomnan's book is an attempt to compile a biblical studies manual according to the demands of Augustine (354-430) - one of which was that there had to be an empirical witness. Thus, Adomnan wrote the work and employed Arculf as a literary device. However, he produced the desired manual which remained in use until the Reformation.    As a manual we can use it to study the nature of scriptural studies in the Latin world of the time, and perceptions of space, relics, pilgrimage, and Islam. While a study of how the work was used by others, transmitted, reworked (for example by the Venerable Bede) brings unique light onto the theological world of the Carolingians.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52619434688785,"sku":"NLS9780567031839","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780567031839.jpg?v=1761535885"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-thomas-o-loughlin.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
