He is a theologian with a flair for language that appeals to ordinary readers, a monk in a very masculine world who is not afraid of deep emotional feelings. Few other spiritual writers can achieve his poignancy without trailing into sentimentality. Yet for seven hundred years John has remained largely unknown and ignored. He passed much of his life at the Cistercian abbey of Forde in southwest England at the end of the twelfth century, active in the Order and well-known among his contemporaries. Only with the publication of his sermons on the Song of Songs, first in Latin and then in English, has he become known to moderns, even modern Cistercians. Here in one volume is an introduction to his spirituality, typical of his age and Order and yet ageless. His charm for readers today lies in the genial simplicity of his style, which speaks directly to the heart. Hilary Costello, OCSO, is a monk of Mount Saint Bernard Abbey in England, where he currently serves as guest master, and the editor of the critical Latin edition of the Sermons of John of Forde on the Song of Songs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49518253375761,"sku":"GOR002076346","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51902891426065,"sku":"GOR014454434","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879075694.jpg?v=1763634636"},{"product_id":"letters-of-adam-of-perseigne-book-adam-of-perseigne-9780879076214","title":"The Letters Of Adam Of Perseigne","description":"Abbot of the Cistercian monastery at Perseigne, Adam was a 'director of souls' in the late twelfth century. By his letters he counselled clerics and kings, nuns and nobles with affection, respect, and candor. Because his monastery lay in Normandy, he enjoyed close ties with Norman England and acted as an adviser to the crusader-king, Richard the Lion-hearted. Yet this intimate of the high-born was himself the son of a serf.    Nothing certain is know of the education by which Adam rose from the peasantry, but he is an example of the way in which a young man could improve his station by entering clerical life. After being ordained priest, Adam found favor at the witty and sophisticated court of the Countess of Champagne.    In his letters, Adam reveals that at some point he began to seek a disciplined life of prayer and entered a monastery of cannons regular. Dissatisfied there, he transferred to a Benedictine monastery, and then to a Cistercian abbey, likely Pontigny. His final choice may have been guided in large part by his great personal devotion to the infant Jesus and to His Mother, the patroness of the Cistercian Order. Marian devotion had grown rapidly in the twelfth century and was echoed in secular life by the increasing chivalric regard for ladies which found its greatest expression at the court of Champagne. In several of his letters Adam speaks tenderly of the virtues and graces of Saint Mary, giving eloquent voice to the popular love and admiration which swept across western Europe in the twelfth century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49532327821585,"sku":"GOR013581841","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879076216.jpg?v=1763635233"},{"product_id":"liturgical-sermons-volume-1-book-guerric-of-igny-9780879072087","title":"Liturgical Sermons Volume 1","description":"Guerric of Igny (†1157) ranks with Bernard of Clairvaux, Aelred of Rievaulx, and William of Saint Thierry as one of 'the four evangelists of Citeaux'. Urged to stay by the always persuasive Abbot Bernard, however, 'without delay or looking back, the cleric became a monk, the master a schoolboy.' In 1138, again at Bernard's suggestion and despite his own protestations that he lacked the requisite wisdom and health, Guerric was elected as the second abbot of Igny, a daughter house of Clairvaux near Rheims. There he wrote the sermons which reveal the quality of his education, the profundity of his theology, and the pervasiveness of his Cistercian spirit.   The Liturgical Sermons of Guerric of Igny are published in two volumes: Book One contains Sermons 1-21; Book Two contains Sermons 22-54.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49538465497361,"sku":"GOR007621352","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009161068817,"sku":"NIN9780879072087","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52136778105105,"sku":"NLS9780879072087","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879072083.jpg?v=1766141921"},{"product_id":"on-the-apocalypse-book-geoffrey-of-auxerre-9780879076429","title":"On the Apocalypse","description":"A bright and capable student of Peter Abelard, Geoffrey of Auxerre surprisingly abandoned student life in Paris without hesitation after hearing Bernard of Clairvaux preach on conversion. It stands in the tradition of the Fathers of the Church, but it carries patristic teaching into the Middle Ages and into the cloister. Its famous affirmation that God is to be loved without limit, sine modo, is taken directly from the letters of Saint Augustine. While the tract is not an example of scholastic theology, it shows a typically twelfth-century love of logic and an unexpectedly precise use of terminology. In his analystic commentary, Emero Stiegman not only introduces readers to the abbot of Clairvaux's thought, but carefully analyses his language, his logic and his theology. In doing so, he demonstrates the vital importance of reading medieval authors on their own terms, without superimposing on them categories favored by later generations, even our own.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49975479042321,"sku":"CIN0879071141G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50827446354193,"sku":"CIN0879071141VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50924422365457,"sku":"GOR009683730","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984752906513,"sku":"NIN9780879071141","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52233997156625,"sku":"NLS9780879071141","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879071141.jpg?v=1763634432"},{"product_id":"spiritual-friendship-book-aelred-of-rievaulx-9780879079703","title":"Spiritual Friendship","description":"Spiritual Friendship is today the best known and perhaps most influential of the thirteen surviving works of Aelred, abbot of the great English Cistercian abbey of Rievaulx from 1147 '1167. Such a person was Gilbert of Hoyland, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Swineshead in Lincolnshire, a friend of Aelred of Rievaulx, and the continuator of the sermons on the Song of Songs begun by Bernard of Clairvaux.   When the great saint of Clairvaux died in 1153, his sermon commentary had reached only the first four verses of chapter three of the Canticle. Gilbert took up the task, but left the commentary unfinished at his death. It was brought to completion by another English abbot, John of Ford.   Those who know and admire Bernard's eloquence and contemplative insight will enjoy making the acquaintance of his successors. While conscious of continuing Bernard's work and remaining true to his spirit, they infused their sermons with their own personalities and shared their own rich experiences of God. As Lawrence C. Wresting secular hands from control of monastic offices and finances, the great burgundian monastery and its hundreds of daughter houses inspired eleventh-century churchmen to seize control of the Church from petty lords and outraged emperors. Powerful and respected, the Cluniac order cast a long shadow over the european Church, but it's very position of leadership brought prosperity into the cloister and, in its train, complacency.    The Cistercians were founded in 1098 to revive the primitive observance of the Rule of St Benedict. Having experienced the worldly dangers threatening, even embraced by, the Black Monks of Cluny, the White Monks of Cîtwaux resolved to withdraw from, not to reform, the world. Their uncompromising asceticism attracted scores of young men, and soon the Cistercian Order outstripped the Cluniac in pious prestige and personnel.    Cluniacs felt censured; Cistercians grew smug. As rumors mounted in the spring or summer of 1125, William, the Benedictine abbot of Saint-Thierry, exhorted his good friend Bernard, the Cistercian abbot of Clairvaux, to take pen in hand to check mutual rancor.    This Apologia, composed by Bernard and approved by William, is the result. it excoriates monks black and white: Cistercian who had become slanderers, Cluniacs who had grown self-indulgent, Bernard's satirical wit spared no one who had lost sight of the monk's first duty, the love of God and the brethren.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50175935643921,"sku":"CIN0879071028G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51078686703889,"sku":"NIN9780879071028","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51166635196689,"sku":"GOR012065215","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52330822336785,"sku":"NLS9780879071028","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53433484640529,"sku":"CIN0879071028VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879071028.jpg?v=1763633833"},{"product_id":"in-the-school-of-love-book-edith-scholl-ocso-9780879075644","title":"In The School Of Love","description":"Lectio is a meeting with God in and through his word. Bernard of Clairvaux towered over the society of twelfth-century Europe. A brilliant preacher and a polished writer; he counselled kings and rebuked popes. He moved in the complicated affairs of men with a dexterity which brought him acclaim and adversaries, yet he exhorted Christians to turn from worldly affairs to serve God.    He remains a man of paradoxes. He crisscrossed Europe while insisting that monks have no place outside their monasteries. He inveighed against two of the most renowned scholars of his day, yet he helped support the education of numerous students. He persuaded two kings to take up a crusade against the Moslems, yet he preached that persuasion and not force should be used against unbelievers.    A profound mystic, Bernard sought, above all and in all, to be with God and to bring all persons to the experience of God. Bernard's first deliberately theological treatise, it demonstrates the conceptual precision, the contemplative insight, and the rhetorical delicacy of which he was capable. The tension between God's grace and human free will has intrigued Christians throughout their long history, and it was receiving renewed attention in the early twelfth century. Bernard manifests both personal reflection and familiarity with theological tradition. As novice master and abbot, this Bernard of the North composed works of history and theology, and among the great medieval spiritual writers remains even today the easiest and plainest guide to the practical question of how to begin to pray. The three treatises translated in this volume seem to date from his years as abbot of Rievaulx (1146 until his death in 1166). In Jesus at the Age of Twelve he reflects on the historical, allegorical, and moral meaning of gospel passage recounting the visit of the boy Jesus to the Temple at Jerusalem. Lingering Victorian attitudes towards the opposition between sex and religion find the Song's frank erotic language embarrassing and even distasteful.\" But in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, the Song of Songs was a favorite book of Cistercian monks. Bernard of Clairvaux, Gilbert of Hoyland, and John of Ford, as well as William of Saint Thierry, read it as a dialogue between Christ the Bridegroom and the human soul, the Bride. William of Saint Thierry began composing his commentary soon after entering the Cistercian abbey of Signy in 1135. Having left behind a busy life as a Benedictine abbot and author of theological treatises, he turned to writing meditations on Scripture as the means of listening to the voice of the Beloved. It is therefore ironic that he broke off his commentary on the Song, never to return to it, to alert the Church in France to the teaching of Peter Abelard and then to compose two treatises correcting what he deeply believed were Abelard's theological errors. \"","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50512869753105,"sku":"CIN0879073470VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009036517649,"sku":"NIN9780879073473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52648225014033,"sku":"NLS9780879073473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879073470.jpg?v=1763634965"},{"product_id":"homilies-in-praise-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary-book-bernard-of-clairvaux-9780879071486","title":"Homilies in Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary","description":"To sing the praises of Mary, Bernard studies and contemplates her there where God has so perfectly revealed her, in the Scriptures, taking as his text the passage from Luke, An Angel was sent to a virgin named Mary. His own experience of human weakness in a worldly life at the court of King David of Scotland made him sensitive to the doctrine of charity which he found among cistercian monks. The Mirror of Charity gives us a solid theology of the cistercian life. Aelred's deep knowledge of Scripture, his joy in his brethren, and his love of Christ shine from every page. Because the divine nature is love, as the Bible tells us, directing our love to God-love conforms us to the image of God that has been lost through sin. All love, to Aelred, is a participation in God-love that leads us to union. William of Saint Thierry's Exposition is a thoroughly monastic text. In it the twelfth-century monk is concerned, not with dialectic or scholastic disputation, but with something far more personal: humility of heart and the recovery of the image of God in fallen humankind. Only when a person is open to God's grace can growth occur. William is convinced of this. He hopes to convince us of it. He sings the praises of God's grace. He combs Scripture for insights on the workings of grace. Several times in the course of the commentary, he shifts from narrative to address God directly. In doing so, he adds a personal, intimate touch to a literary genre which was soon to become settled in the impersonal methodology of the Schools.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009015677201,"sku":"NIN9780879075279","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52690567233809,"sku":"NLS9780879075279","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879075279.jpg?v=1763634408"},{"product_id":"sermons-on-the-christian-year-book-lewis-white-9780879076665","title":"Sermons on the Christian Year","description":"Isaac of Stella was an English-born Cistercian who studied in the schools before entering monastic life and becoming abbot of Stella in 1147. He joined the fifteen-year-old monastery of Cîteaux in 1113. In 1115 he became the founding abbot of Clairvaux Abbey, whence his name, Bernard of Clairvaux. Saint Bernard was a gifted and prolific writer of theological treatises, Scriptural commentaries, letters, and many sermons. The sermons in the collection published here, styled Sermones de diversis (Sermons about Various Topics), lack the specific point of departure that characterizes his other sermons. That is, whereas the sermons on the Song of Songs are a verse-by-verse commentary on that biblical book and his Sermons for the Year follow the liturgical calendar, this collection of sermons deals with his various pastoral concerns. Since Scripture is always Bernard’s point of departure and inspiration, the sermons often read like a Scripture study, but what comes through equally is the voice of an understanding spiritual father who is a masterful student of Scripture, biblical language, and the needs of his monks.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51009232797969,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009235910929,"sku":"NIN9780879074685","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52435584286993,"sku":"NLS9780879074685","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/087907468X.jpg?v=1763633756"},{"product_id":"letters-of-adam-of-perseigne-book-adam-of-perseigne-9780879071967","title":"The Letters of Adam of Perseigne","description":"Abbot of the Cistercian monastery at Perseigne, Adam was a 'director of souls' in the late twelfth century. In several of his letters Adam speaks tenderly of the virtues and graces of Saint Mary, giving eloquent voice to the popular love and admiration which swept across western Europe in the twelfth century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51009249673489,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009252851985,"sku":"NIN9780879071967","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404825948433,"sku":"NLS9780879071967","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0879071966.jpg?v=1763635215"},{"product_id":"treatises-book-stephen-of-sawley-9780879076313","title":"Treatises","description":"Translated here for the first time are four works written by Stephen for his monks: A Mirror for Novices, A Threefold Exercise, On the Recitation of the Divine Office, and Meditations on the Joys of the Blessed Virgin.
