A British organisation had been set up to help the adults, but who would save the children? Winton felt he could not walk away. He set up a makeshift office and in just three weeks interviewed thousands of distraught parents who had the courage to part with their children and send them alone to England. Armed with their details and photos, he returned to London to convince the Home Office of the urgency of the situation. He knew he was working against time. His supreme efforts resulted in eight trainloads bringing 669, mainly Jewish, children to London. For half a century these children, now dispersed and in their seventies, were unaware of the person to whom they owed their lives. To Winton, it was just a job. Even his wife knew nothing of what is undoubtedly his greatest achievement, until 1988, when clearing out the attic she came across documentation relating to the episode. From that moment, Winton's life was never the same again. Winton has been a remarkable humanitarian all his life. After the war, wishing to be involved with the rehabilitation of Europe's refugees, he worked for international organisations. He retired early, settled in Maidenhead and devoted himself to charitable works for which he was honoured with the MBE in 1983. Amongst other awards, he was granted the freedom of the City of Prague in 1991 and was awarded the Tomas Garrigue Masaryk Order by President Havel in a grand ceremony in Hradcany Castle in 1999. Nicolas Winton documentary (Power of Good) has won the 2002 International Emmy Award, in the category of TV documentary.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49536542179601,"sku":"GOR001253366","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49730575499537,"sku":"NGR9780853034254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50272016171281,"sku":"GOR010239374","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50831679095057,"sku":"GOR003377875","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984725643537,"sku":"NIN9780853034254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51323737768209,"sku":"CIN0853034257G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52772265066769,"sku":"CIN0853034257VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853034257.jpg?v=1751630494"},{"product_id":"have-you-seen-my-little-sister-book-janina-fischler-martinho-9780853033349","title":"Have You Seen My Little Sister?","description":"Janina Fischler embarks on perhaps the most courageous of all her journeys to date. Here, Janina recounts her escapades, posing as an Aryan orphan, moving from house to house and away from her beloved Cracow to the sometimes more anonymous countryside, always on the run from one thing that truly spelled terror. He escaped from a slave labour camp and survived the Polish winter alone as a fugitive in the forests, living in hand-made shelters dug beneath the ground. He fought as a partisan in the Polish Home Army at a time when few Jews did so (but had to hide his Jewish identity from his comrades to ensure that men in the group he commanded would follow his orders). Finally, under threat from the anti-Semitism of Polish partisans, he joined a parachute group, made up of Russian prisoners-of-war and German veterans from the Spanish Civil War, and fought with them until the end of the War. The role that he played within the partisan movement throws light on a little-researched aspect of the War. After the Second World War, Florian became an officer in the Polish Army, but the new wave of anti-Semitism in the 1960s drove him into exile: first to Israel and, finally, to England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49583719252241,"sku":"GOR003828958","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50686649205009,"sku":"GOR014035774","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50857667166481,"sku":"GOR007175235","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853034613.jpg?v=1757499621"},{"product_id":"with-a-yellow-star-and-a-red-cross-book-arnold-mostowicz-9780853035978","title":"With a Yellow Star and a Red Cross","description":"Described by the book's Polish publisher as a literary take on the author's experience in the Lodz ghetto and the Nazi concentration camps. In this memoir, Anne L. Fox has written about her childhood in Nazi Germany and her subsequent departure to England with the Kindertransport. As a 12-year-old girl, she came to live with a Jewish family in London until the outbreak of World War II when she was evacuated to the countryside. Although she missed her parents terribly, her stay in the village of Swineshead in Bedfordshire was a happy one. In a world of legalized mass murder, instigated by the Nazis and adopted by many in Ukraine, the family was hunted for the crime of being born Jewish, and spent three years surviving against impossible odds, hiding in the forests in Ukraine. Supported by their unshakeable belief in divine guidance, the author's parents secured food and shelter and maintained a semblance of human dignity, keeping a calendar and observing the Sabbath and holidays. Written many years later as a testimony for his children, the book presents a child's experience of survival in the face of Nazi persecution. The rise of fascism in Slovakia destroyed the peaceful co-existence of the Jews with their Slovak neighbours and demoralized both groups. The threat of deportation of Jews from Slovakia to Auschwitz forced Gerti and her parents to flee to Hungary, where deportations of Jews to Auschwitz had not yet begun. There the family lived under an assumed identity. The dangers and isolation associated with this existence plunged Gerti into depression and forced her to learn skills of deception to survive. As Hitler's grip on Hungary tightened and the dangers for Jews in Hungary increased, Gerti's father was arrested. Gerti and her mother had to flee to Slovakia in the spring of 1944, where they assumed yet further false identities. During the summer of 1944 Gerti met her childhood friend Walter (Rudi Vrba), who escaped from Auschwitz and told Gerti about his first-hand experience of witnessing the mass murders there. With time the remaining few Jews in Slovakia were rounded up. Gerti and her mother were denounced and taken to the Gestapo. The knowledge of the death factories waiting for them encouraged Gerti to take a serious risk and escape. Her mother, however, gave up hope and stayed to perish in a concentration camp. Gerti, then on her own, returned to Budapest and lived through the round up of Jews and the siege, assuming the identity of a Hungarian refugee from Russian-occupied Hungary. To survive, she had to use her hard-learned skills in assessing who she could trust and whom she had to deceive.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50259648282897,"sku":"CIN0853036306G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50713709281553,"sku":"GOR014045357","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52469536555281,"sku":"GOR004411556","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853036306.jpg?v=1751201996"},{"product_id":"my-hometown-concentration-camp-book-bernard-offen-9780853036364","title":"My Hometown Concentration Camp","description":"My Hometown Concentration Camp tells the story of the young Bernard Offen's endurance and survival of the Krak w Ghetto and five concentration camps, including Plasz w and Auschwitz-Birkenau, until his liberation near Dachau by American troops in 1945. Having returned to the United States, Bernard Offen was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War. This was the start of his own unique process of healing that led, ultimately, to his retirement and decision to dedicate his life to educating audiences around the world about his experiences during the Holocaust. Bernard Offen's story recounts his one-man journey across America, Europe, Israel, and back to his native Poland, and his development as a filmmaker, educator, and healer. Trude Levi was inspired to set down her memories of her experiences as a young Hungarian girl deported to Buchenwald to work like a slave in a munitions factory. She says she had no sense of survival but was sustained by a strong sense of self-respect and a stubborn refusal to compromise. On her twenty-first birthday she collapsed from exhaustion on an infamous Death March and was left lying where she fell, not even worth a bullet. So, when the war ended shortly afterwards, she had survived - just. Years of wandering, poverty and hardship followed. Illness, disillusion and the insensitivity of others too their toll, yet the author is able to describe her experiences with directness and without self-pity. But when their daughter, Micki, was born in 1937, financial constraints forced them to delay those plans. On September 1, 1939, they were awakened at dawn by the rumble of German aircraft. The war had begun, and David was angry with himself for not having already emigrated to a safer country. He vowed he would never again allow his inaction to endanger his loved ones. With dogged determination, help from the people he befriended along the way and luck, he guided his wife and two-year-old daughter through the siege of Warsaw, their separation and hiding on the Aryan side of the city, his application for emigration at the Hotel Polski and their two years of internment in Bergen-Belsen. David never gave up hope. He, Sophie and Micki all survive because of it.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50364119613713,"sku":"CIN0853034222G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853034222.jpg?v=1757499251"},{"product_id":"scorched-book-irit-amiel-9780853036340","title":"Scorched","description":"The heroes of the stories in this book are people who in the hell of the Holocaust were doomed for life, people who cannot or do not want to speak about their past, about the heavy baggage of their life's experiences. Being a witness, Irit Amiel translates the long silence of people living in the Israeli melting pot into testimony. The stories are written in a simple and restrained way, but the voices coming out touch the most profound human feelings. These short stories achieve a weight through the use of poetic shortcuts, such as the two-page memory about the last parting from home and parents. His tale then relates the arrival at Monowitz, his fortuitous transfer to the main camp of Auschwitz, and the story of his friend's $100 which ultimately saved both their lives in Buchenwald. It tells of the executions at the Black Wall, which Willy Berler was forced to watch, and of the special commando of the SS Hygiene Institute of Rajsko, which has been relatively undocumented. Finally, it describes the death march, and Willy Berler's chance meeting with an SS murderer from his hometown, who spoke better Yiddish than he did. The book does not simply describe the horror: the story is also a tale of solidarity and friendship, of humanity in a dehumanized universe. Friends, chance, and especially good luck saved him in that hell, allowing him to survive.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50415586836753,"sku":"GOR006855802","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853034699.jpg?v=1757499721"},{"product_id":"by-a-twist-of-history-book-mietek-sieradzki-9780853034261","title":"By a Twist of History","description":"Mietek Sieradzki fled Nazi-occupied Poland to the Soviet Union, from where he was deported to Siberia. Life there was tough and harsh, but he escaped the Holocaust and after the war joined the Polish foreign service. He was posted in Moscow, London, Korea, Cambodia and Canada, in the latter two as head of mission. From the early stages of his career disillusionment with the system set in. In time his reluctance to conform and his Jewish origin made him a target for harassment by the secret services, and eventually the anti- Jewish campaign unleashed in Poland in 1968 ended his career and drove him out of the country. By a Twist of History describes Sieradzki's experiences at the time, and refutes the myth, wide-spread in Poland, that large numbers of Jews had worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and reflects on Polish anti-Semitism. Sieradzki and his family eventually settled in Britain to build a new life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50427092238609,"sku":"GOR007138137","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853034265.jpg?v=1757499401"},{"product_id":"nicholas-winton-and-the-rescued-generation-book-muriel-emanuel-9780853034384","title":"Nicholas Winton and the Rescued Generation","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50469418959121,"sku":"GOR013791612","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50789789204753,"sku":"GOR006045441","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853034389.jpg?v=1750819221"},{"product_id":"holocaust-in-the-ukraine-book-boris-zabarko-9780853036128","title":"Holocaust in the Ukraine","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50554490978577,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50554492584209,"sku":"GOR008288027","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853036128.jpg?v=1751108218"},{"product_id":"little-house-on-mount-carmel-book-alexandre-blumstein-9780853034230","title":"A Little House on Mount Carmel","description":"Alexandre and his family live in Poland, which is partitioned in 1939, followed by a brief period of Soviet rule full of tension and fear. It begins in the spring of 1939, weaves through the post-liberation period and ends in 1997 with a ceremony at Yad Vashem. The acceptance of two of the main characters into the Community of 'Righteous Among the Nations' provokes humbling reflection on the richness of opportunities enjoyed by members of the family who were saved compared with the narrowly circumscribed lives of those who saved them. Set in the broader context of Czechoslovakia's short history, its democratic institutions and endemic anti-Semitism, Good Beyond Evil is a also a requiem for a once-flourishing Jewish community.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50582300819729,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50582301442321,"sku":"GOR010184750","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52816482205969,"sku":"CIN085303446XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/085303446X.jpg?v=1757499498"},{"product_id":"holocaust-in-the-ukraine-book-boris-zabarko-9780853035244","title":"Holocaust in the Ukraine","description":"The Nazis and their collaborators murdered 1.5 million Jews in the Ukraine. But, for a long time the subject of the Holocaust was a forbidden subject not only in the USSR but throughout the socialist bloc. It has only recently become a respectable research topic. This is a collection of 86 personal testimonies from survivors of the Shoah in the Ukraine. The objective of the book is not to relate historical facts and data but to relate a story of the inhumane experiences of people who were destined to die but managed to survive. The idea for the book was stimulated by Zabarko's participation in a project (organized in 1994 by the Documentation Centre of Yale University) to collect audio and video testimonies of Holocaust survivors from the Ukraine.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50811058028817,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50811058913553,"sku":"GOR006431586","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853035245.jpg?v=1751297736"},{"product_id":"warsaw-diary-book-michael-zylberberg-9780853036852","title":"A Warsaw Diary","description":"A story of one of the few survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto and of an underground existence in the non-Jewish part of the city during the Second World War.
