{"title":"Music Culture Ser","description":null,"products":[{"product_id":"city-of-musical-memory-book-lise-a-waxer-9780819564429","title":"The City of Musical Memory","description":"Salsa is a popular dance music developed by Puerto Ricans in New York City during the 1960s and 70s, based on Afro-Cuban forms. By the 1980s, the Colombian metropolis of Cali emerged on the global stage as an important center for salsa consumption and performance. Despite their geographic distance from the Caribbean and from Hispanic Caribbean migrants in New York City, Cale os (people from Cali) claim unity with Cubans, Puerto Ricans and New York Latinos by virtue of their having adopted salsa as their own. The City of Musical Memory explores this local adoption of salsa and its Afro-Caribbean antecedents in relation to national and regional musical styles, shedding light on salsa's spread to other Latin American cities. Cali's case disputes the prevalent academic notion that live music is more real or authentic than its recorded versions, since in this city salsa recordings were until recently much more important than musicians themselves, and continued to be influential in the live scene. This book makes valuable contributions to ongoing discussions about the place of technology in music culture and the complex negotiations of local and transnational cultural identities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49510097649937,"sku":"GOR005864375","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50306507964689,"sku":"CIN0819564427G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008401146129,"sku":"NIN9780819564429","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52471164567825,"sku":"CIN0819564427VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819564427.jpg?v=1751396742"},{"product_id":"music-of-the-common-tongue-book-christopher-small-9780819563576","title":"Music of the Common Tongue","description":"In clear and elegant prose, Music of the Common Tongue, first published in 1987, argues that by any reasonable reckoning of the function of music in human life the African American tradition, that which stems from the collision between African and European ways of doing music which occurred in the Americas and the Caribbean during and after slavery, is the major western music of the twentieth century. In showing why this is so, the author presents not only an account of African American music from its origins but also a more general consideration of the nature of the music act and of its function in human life. The two streams of discussion occupy alternate chapters so that each casts light on the other. The author offers also an answer to what the Musical Times called the seldom posed though glaringly obtrusive question: why is it that the music of an alienated, oppressed, often persecuted black minority should have made so powerful an impact on the entire industrialized world, whatever the color of its skin or economic status?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49526223143185,"sku":"GOR007719034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53614569685265,"sku":"CIN0819563579G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819563579.jpg?v=1751396741"},{"product_id":"hidden-musicians-book-ruth-finnegan-9780819568533","title":"The Hidden Musicians","description":"A classic ethnography reveals the worlds of amateur musicians. Resilience","description":"In Musical Resilience, Shalini Ayyagari shows how professional low-caste musicians from the Thar Desert borderland of Rajasthan, India have skillfully reinvented their cultural and economic value in postcolonial India. Before India's independence in 1947, the Manganiyar community of hereditary musicians were tied to traditional patrons over centuries and through hereditary ties. In postcolonial India, traditional patronage relations faded due to new political conditions, technological shifts, and cultural change. Ayyagari uses resilience, one of the most poignant keywords of our times, to understand how Manganiyar musicians sustain and enliven their cultural significance after the fading of traditional patronage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742747369745,"sku":"NGR9780819500106","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52435903119633,"sku":"CIN0819500100VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52504305434897,"sku":"GOR012756784","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52504403869969,"sku":"GOR014542544","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819500100.jpg?v=1751043790"},{"product_id":"land-is-sung-book-thomas-m-pooley-9780819500588","title":"The Land Is Sung","description":"Engaging with justice and environmental ethics, education and indigenous knowledge systems, musical and linguistic analysis, and the ethics of recording practice, Pooley's analysis draws on genres of music and dance recorded in the midlands and borderlands of South Africa, and in Johannesburg's inner city.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49752780275985,"sku":"NGR9780819500588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008409174289,"sku":"NIN9780819500588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819500585.jpg?v=1750882949"},{"product_id":"you-better-work-book-kai-fikentscher-9780819564047","title":"You Better Work!","description":"The first in-depth study of underground dance music.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49774024687889,"sku":"CIN0819564044G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819564044.jpg?v=1751233477"},{"product_id":"club-cultures-book-sarah-thornton-9780819562975","title":"Club Cultures","description":"Focusing on youth cultures that revolve around dance clubs and raves in Great Britain and the U.S., Sarah Thornton highlights the values of authenticity and hipness and explores the complex hierarchies that emerge within the domain of popular culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49789389701393,"sku":"CIN0819562971G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49851734327569,"sku":"CIN0819562971A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008407011601,"sku":"NIN9780819562975","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51715099820305,"sku":"CIN0819562971VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52693506457873,"sku":"GOR007856200","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819562971.jpg?v=1751233475"},{"product_id":"christopher-small-reader-book-christopher-small-9780819576408","title":"The Christopher Small Reader","description":"The Christopher Small Reader is the final book in Christopher Small's legacy as a composer, pianist, teacher, provocateur, and influential outsider in classical music studies. In this fascinating study of the materials that surround LPs and CDs, Colin Symes undertakes a cultural history of the record, looking specifically at the way the phonograph helped democratize classical music by enabling it to be heard at home, away from the concert hall. Symes argues that the listening habits associated with classical records and recording were produced and naturalized through a magazine culture, which conveyed the idea that collecting and listening to records were legitimate pastimes for the general public. The first chapter lays out a textual theory of the phonograph and compact disc, while subsequent chapters look critically and historically at the different components of the recording process: covers and cover notes, the rhetoric of the record review, the influence of recording on performance, the domestication of the concert hall, advertising in the record industry, and even the architecture of record shops. Symes's path-breaking history will engage anyone with an interest in classical music and recording.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51615935365393,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51615935594769,"sku":"GOR007308207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819567213.jpg?v=1751329671"},{"product_id":"my-music-my-war-book-lisa-gilman-9780819576002","title":"My Music, My War","description":"This moving ethnographic study examines U.S. troops' musical-listening habits during and after the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, giving an account of what war was like for those most intimately involved, and fresh insight into musical listening as it relates to social dynamics, gender, community formation, memory, trauma, and politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51695814148369,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51695814738193,"sku":"CIN081957600XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52817276993809,"sku":"CIN081957600XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/081957600X.jpg?v=1751297748"},{"product_id":"planet-beethoven-book-mina-yang-9780819574862","title":"Planet Beethoven","description":"Exploring the complexities and significance of classical music today","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52329952411921,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52329952968977,"sku":"CIN0819574864A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780819574862.jpg?v=1758125789"},{"product_id":"remixing-race-after-apartheid-book-francesca-inglese-9780819502353","title":"Remixing Race after Apartheid","description":"The first in-depth study of Kaapse klopse, a carnival tradition in South Africa_x000D_ _x000D_ Remixing Race is the first ethnographic monograph centered on Kaapse klopse, a South African carnival tradition, and it uses this genre as a critical lens to explore how sound mediates racial identity in the postapartheid era. Deeply affected by the neoliberal deterioration of working-class life in the region, hinchas use practices such as drumming, launching pyrotechnics, and singing contrafacta of popular music—activities that circulate transnationally through both digital and analog media—to cheer for their teams. Hinchas discuss and compete, both domestically and internationally, over which hinchada is the most musically creative, dominantly assertive, unwaveringly loyal, and sonically intense in South America. Drawing on first person accounts as well as media coverage, Luis Achondo shows that the hinchas use sound to create alternative imaginaries, make their deprived social conditions audible, and sometimes to engage in deadly conflicts where violence often becomes the primary mode of resolution. This study demonstrates that fan (re)mediation has constructed a transnational public assembly that considers itself a central component of soccer, challenging the notion of sports as mere athletic events and fanbases as simple consumer bases. Examining how sound mediates necropolitical relations among fans, the book also highlights how sound functions as both a source and expression of necropower among hinchas.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52763299676433,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52763300200721,"sku":"NIN9780819501936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"seeding-the-tradition-book-alexander-m-cannon-9780819580801","title":"Seeding the Tradition","description":"With ethnographic descriptions of zither lessons in Ho Chi Minh City, outdoor music cafes in Can Tho, and television programs in ong Thap, Seeding the Tradition offers a rich description of southern Vietnamese sang tao and suggests revised approaches to studying creativity in contemporary ethnomusicology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53208985141521,"sku":"GOR014806973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780819580801.jpg?v=1772705433"},{"product_id":"antiphonal-histories-book-julia-byl-9780819574794","title":"Antiphonal Histories","description":"A vivid ethnography and in-depth history of musical performance in North Sumatra","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53237783003409,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53237783920913,"sku":"CIN0819574791VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780819574794.jpg?v=1773188258"},{"product_id":"carriacou-string-band-serenade-book-rebecca-s-miller-9780819501486","title":"Carriacou String Band Serenade","description":"Every year, on a weekend before Christmas, the small Caribbean island of Carriacou, Grenada, holds its annual Parang Festival, featuring concerts, performances of local quadrille dance, Hosannah band (a cappella singing) competitions, and the climactic string band competition. Born in the years leading up to Grenada's 1979 Socialist Revolution, the Parang Festival today offers a vehicle for Carriacouans to articulate and assert a progressive understanding of local cultural identity as well as a regional, pan-Caribbean belonging. Rebecca S. Miller examines the varying impact that factors such as cultural ambivalence, globalization, and technology have had on the performance of Carriacou's folk and traditional music and dance forms. In Among the Jasmine Trees: Music and Modernity in Contemporary Syria, Jonathan H. Shannon investigates expressions of authenticity in Syria's musical culture, which is particularly known for embracing and preserving the Arab musical tradition, and which has seldom been researched in depth by Western scholars. Music plays a key role in the process of self-imaging by virtue of its ability to convey feeling and emotion, and Shannon explores a variety of performance genres, Sufi rituals, song lyrics, melodic modes, and aesthetic criteria. Shannon shows that although the music may evoke the old, the traditional, and the local, these are re-envisioned as signifiers of the modern national profile. A valuable contribution to the study of music and identity and to the ethnomusicology of the modern Middle East, Among the Jasmine Trees details this music and its reception for the first time, offering an original theoretical framework for understanding contemporary Arab culture, music, and society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53548239847697,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53548239880465,"sku":"GOR014957776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780819569448.jpg?v=1778610745"},{"product_id":"communities-of-sound-book-carola-e-lorea-9780819502247","title":"Communities of Sound","description":"Sounding untouchability across postcolonial borders_x000D_ _x000D_ Communities of Sound brings together insights from religion, anthropology, sound, and migration studies to explore the sonic traces of untouchability and forced migration across the Bay of Bengal. Based on an immersive, multi-sited ethnography with Matua devotees—a low-caste, Bengali-speaking Dalit religious community fragmented by Partition, war, and postcolonial displacement—the book explores how sound sustains identity across fractured geographies. Using richly detailed descriptions, the book follows traveling archives of song, story, and ritual performance through West Bengal, Bangladesh, and the Andaman Islands. These sonic practices—congregational singing, drumming, and itinerant storytelling—forge belonging beyond nation-states, connecting the Matua's fifty million members across borders and seas. In a world dominated by visual culture, Communities of Sound centers listening as a mode of knowledge and care, revealing how sound shapes our sense of self and cosmos. More than scriptures or doctrine, it is sound—entangled with authority and power—that binds this transregional Dalit movement and animates its collective action. Jews give great attention to the care of Torah scrolls, ensuring they are maintained and protected so that they can be used for ritually chanting the Torah portion regularly. Traders, Chanters and Mystics: The Networked Afterlives of North African Torah Scrolls is an interdisciplinary ethnography of these ritual objects (or subjects) and their role in embedding neighborly relations into Jewish life over centuries. Drawing on Actor-Network Theory, the book foregrounds Torah scrolls not simply as vessels of text but as agents with social lives and affect—as subjects that act within networks of devotion, memory, and migration. In analyzing the scroll's diverse afterlives—how they are celebrated and venerated, how they are chanted from in new surroundings (primarily in France), and how they are collected by Jews and non-Jews—Webster-Kogen offers a new reading of Jewish embeddedness in North African culture and history. Scrolls's afterlives constitute patrimony and restitution, and they can be approached as musical instrument or mystical medium. Anchored in France's Sephardic-majority Jewish communities, this study emphasizes liturgical continuity, offering new insights into ritual, migration, and the entangled afterlives of sacred objects in postcolonial contexts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53601522549009,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53601522745617,"sku":"NIN9780819502315","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780819502315.jpg?v=1779900735"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/music-culture-ser-buchreihe.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
