The author of the History is a champion of the original community and compares it favourably with the Gloucester house, as well as giving his reflections on the duties of superiors and subordinates in the monastic life and describing and assessing the individual priors. This was one of the most popular works of the Middle Ages, a favourite of Chaucer, Gower, and Henryson, and was copied for over three centuries, with a circulation extending as far as eastern Europe. It is not only a milestone in the history of medieval beast epic, but a rich source of information about contemporary life and events at Canterbury. The work is dedicated to William Longchamp, who was Richard I's chancellor, and the significance of this fact is shown. This is a highly entertaining narrative about a donkey who longs to have a longer tail and journeys to Salerno to buy some (imaginary) medicines which will provide it. When his medicines are destroyed in an accident, he decides to become learned instead, and goes off to study at the university of Paris for seven years, but can still say only 'heehaw'. Interwoven into this simple narrative are other stories and long rhetorical set-pieces which satirise the distorted values of contemporary religious life or the corruption of the papal curia, and describe the qualities of an ideal bishop (which the donkey hopes to become).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49747299205393,"sku":"NGR9780192857712","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52698391314705,"sku":"NIN9780192857712","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192857711.jpg?v=1751258441"},{"product_id":"gesta-francorum-et-aliorum-hierosolimitanorum-book-rosalind-hill-9780198222095","title":"Gesta Francorum et aliorum Hierosolimitanorum","description":"The Deeds of the Franks and the other Pilgrims to Jerusalem. Its authorship and date cannot be established entirely beyond dispute, but the weight of scholarly opinion supports a date of composition of 1068 or earlier, by Guy, bishop of Amiens, thus making it the earliest surviving account. Whatever its date, the Carmen remains a source of intrinsic interest and importance, and one used by some of the great chroniclers of the period, such as Orderic Vitalis. It is an epic poem, concerned with some of the most momentous events of a remarkable year, in which Halley's comet was a disturbing portent of undisclosed disasters. For this second edition, Frank Barlow has written an entirely new and substantial historical introduction, incorporating the scholarly research of a generation. His life was recorded by Benedictine monk Reginald of Durham, but the work has hitherto only been available in manuscripts and in one nineteenth century edition by Joseph Stevenson. The contemporary audience for Reginald's account has been said to be small, provincial and local, comprising mostly peasants and women. Subsequently, Godric has been famous for his songs, which have had a separate transmission and are still performed today. Much past research on Godric of Finchdale has been based on summaries or epitomes of Reginald's work. It is now clear that several authors rewrote the story to omit many miracles and large potions of text, and that only one manuscript remains testament to the original. This book is the first full, literal translation, presenting Reginald's work as closely as possible to the single original manuscript, and opening up the work to a wider audience for the first time. This translation of The Life and Miracles of Saint Godric, Hermit of Finchale uses the one remaining original manuscript to open up Reginald of Durham's work to a wider audience.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50293384315153,"sku":"NGR9780199641796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000181817617,"sku":"NIN9780199641796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/019964179X.jpg?v=1751101647"},{"product_id":"various-arts-book-theophilus-9780198222064","title":"The Various Arts","description":"As far as is known, Theophilus's was the only treatise on almost all the major arts that was produced during the thousand years of the Middle Ages. In his preface he presents the philosophical attitudes to the visual arts of a thinking man of the time. In his main text, which he divides into three Books, he explains the contemporary techniques of making wall-paintings, manuscripts paintings, stained glass windows, ivory carvings, and various kinds of metalwork. The first references to oil painting and paper occur in the treatise, which also gives the earliest known instructions for making an organ. Theophilus's treatise has been of interest to scholars for some centuries. It was referred to by Cornelius Agrippa in the sixteenth century, and was the basis of an article by Lessing in the eighteenth. The original autograph manuscript has not survived, but the reconstruction of it by Professor Dodwell is now considered to provide its only definitive text: this comprehensive edition includes an English translation on facing pages and full introductory and textual commentary.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346331603217,"sku":"CIN0198222068G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51829847654673,"sku":"GOR009387336","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198222068.jpg?v=1751004972"},{"product_id":"gesta-normannorum-ducum-of-william-of-jumieges-orderic-vitalis-and-robert-of-tor-book-elisabeth-m-c-van-houts-9780198205203","title":"The Gesta Normannorum Ducum of William of Jumieges, Orderic Vitalis, and Robert of Torigni: Volume II: Books V-VIII","description":"The Gesta Normannorum Ducum is one of the most important sources for the history of Normandy and England in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and contains the earliest prose account of the Norman Conquest. It was written by a succession of authors, the first of whom was William of Jumieges, who wrote for William the Conqueror. Later historians, such as Orderic Vitalis (d. c. 1142) and Robert of Torigni (d. 1186), interpolated and extended the chronicle as far as King Henry I (1100-1135). The later accretions reveal much not only about changing attitudes towards the Norman invasion of England, but also about views of the early Viking foundations of Normandy. Elisabeth van Houts's two-volume edition is based on a study of all forty-seven extant manuscripts of the Gesta, including the earliest surviving copy of c. 1100, unknown until very recently. The full original text of William of Jumieges is supplied, as well as the integral text of the subsequent revisions and additions. Volume I contains Dr van Houts's introduction to the whole work, together with the text and translation of books i-iv. Volume II contains books v-viii. It provides a fascinating account of Edward the Confessor and his family: his wife Edith, his father-in-law Earl Godwin, and the queen's brothers Tostig and Harold (king in 1066). The foundations of the legend of St Edward the Confessor are apparent from the version of the work supplied by the unique MS of c.1100. Professor Barlow explores the problems raised by this anonymous work in its now incomplete MS, and examines the development of the cult of St Edward. He also investigates the life and works of Folcard and Goscelin of St Bertin, possible authors. Recent discoveries have enabled Professor Barlow to reconstruct in part the lacunae in BL Harley MS 526 with texts closer to the original. It is a description of the similarities and differences among the various orders of monks, canons, and hermits, and, though clearly a contribution to a contemporary debate, is more analytical than polemical. Its unknown author, 'R', perhaps a regular canon, builds his case by demonstrating how each order and profession corresponds to a group mentioned in the Old Testament: thus prefigured and performing their proper functions they all fill a legitimate place within the unity of the Church. Completed in 731, it comprises in a single flowing narrative a coherent history of the conversion of the English peoples to Christianity, and the story of the island kingdoms and churches from the 590s to the early eighth century, prefaced by a sketch of the earlier history of Britain. In 1969 the Clarendon Press published the new edition in Oxford Medieval Texts, edited by Bertram Colgrave and Sir Roger Mynors. Mynors's masterly text and textual introduction replaced much of Charles Plummer's great edition of 1896; but the historical notes did not attempt to match in scale and detail Plummer's second volume of commentary. To fill this gap the late Professor J. M. Wallace-Hadrill devoted the last years of his life to a new commentary, one of the finest and most mature fruits of his scholarship - more succinct than Plummer, tauter, more relevant, above all drawing together and adding to the findings of a galaxy of modern scholars. Prepared for the press by Thomas Charles-Edwards, helped by Patrick Wormald and others, this book completes the new Bede, and is prefaced by a paper characteristic of Professor Wallace-Hadrill on `Bede and Plummer'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50725885772049,"sku":"GOR002359343","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51137253835025,"sku":"NIN9780198221746","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402496766225,"sku":"NLS9780198221746","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198221746.jpg?v=1750972839"},{"product_id":"ecclesiastical-history-of-orderic-vitalis-book-orderic-vitalis-9780198202202","title":"The Ecclesiastical History of Orderic Vitalis","description":"Orderic's history, written in Normandy between 1114 and 1141, tells of the Normans and the part they played in promoting the interest of the Church and especially monasticism at the time when their secular exploits included the conquest and colonization of England and Sicily.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50726388531473,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50726388990225,"sku":"GOR005015771","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402517737745,"sku":"NLS9780198202202","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198202202.jpg?v=1751132949"},{"product_id":"life-of-christina-of-markyate-book-ch-talbot-9780198212744","title":"The Life of Christina of Markyate","description":"The Life of Christiana of Markyate gives an exceptionally vivid account of the struggles of a young girl, vowed at an early age to celibacy, to escape the matrimonial snares set by her parents and her friends. But the marriage was not consummated, and eventually she escaped, became a recluse and a nun, and the prioress of a small community at Markyate in Hertfordshire, under the patronage of the abbot and monks of St Albans, who made the famous St Albans' Psalter for her. The Life, written by one of her chaplains largely from her own reminiscences, was discovered, or rediscovered, by C.H. Talbot in a Cotton Manuscript in the British Library. Gerald was born in south-west Wales of mixed Norman and Welsh descent and educated at Gloucester and in Paris. He worked for Henry II and Richard I, by whom he was valued as an intermediary between the king and Gerald's relations, who included the leading Welsh king, Rhys ap Gruffudd, and many of the first English settlers in Ireland. When elected bishop of St Davids, Gerald was sent by his fellow-canons to Rome to secure his own consecration and metropolitan status for St Davids; ultimately, both cases failed, defeated by the combined power and resources of the English state and church. Near the beginning of this final part, the single MS breaks off, but the chapter-headings show that much of the substance is preserved in another work by Gerald. Durham and then at Durham itself. The text edited and translated here for the first time for over a century is the most complete and detailed account of the history of that church. Important as a piece of early post-Conquest historiography by an author about whom much is now known, the text is fascinating for the details it gives about the ecclesiastical community of Durham, the miracles which its members believed had occurred, and the place of the church of Durham in relation to the lands and secular inhabitants of northern England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999929274641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999932354833,"sku":"NIN9780198202073","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52425160261905,"sku":"NLS9780198202073","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198202075.jpg?v=1751132948"},{"product_id":"treatise-on-the-laws-and-customs-of-the-realm-of-england-commonly-called-glanvil-book-the-late-g-d-g-hall-9780198221791","title":"The Treatise on the Laws and Customs of the Realm of England Commonly Called Glanvill","description":"This classic edition of Glanvill, by the great medievalist G.D.G.Hall, has now been reissued by Oxford University Press. The treatise on the laws and customs of the realm of England commonly called Glanvill is undoubtedly one of the best-known and most important works of medieval English law. Its itemization and commentary upon writs and the procedure connected with them provides invaluable information in legal practice in the twelfth century, but the treatise has far more than this to offer. It is a work of original analysis, covering such significant topics as dowry, debt, and inheritance, and allowing us a unique insight into the medieval legal mind.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999978426641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999981637905,"sku":"NIN9780198221791","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52400845521169,"sku":"NLS9780198221791","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198221797.jpg?v=1751036901"},{"product_id":"burchard-of-mount-sion-o-p-book-john-r-bartlett-9780198789512","title":"Burchard of Mount Sion, O. P.","description":"In his 'Description of the Holy Land', written in Latin around 1283, the Dominican Burchard explores the land in a series of itineraries starting from Acre in the north, and then from Jerusalem in the south. His particular concern is to identify and describe towns and other sites mentioned in the Bible as an aid to pilgrims and biblical scholars. He treated the evidence of the Bible and other sources carefully, he used the evidence of place-names preserved from antiquity, and he knew the land from personal observation, not simply from the writings of his predecessors. His identifications (e.g., of Dan and Beersheba) are not always supported by modern archaeological evidence, but he understood the importance of it, as shown by his explanation of the survival below ground level of early Christian sites, and his discussion of the site of ancient Jerusalem. Burchard's work exists in both a longer and a shorter, abbreviated, version. This book contains the Latin texts, drawn from selected manuscripts, complete with apparatus criticus, and translations of both versions. Introductory chapters cover what is known of Burchard and his career, the manuscript evidence for his two versions of the Descriptio and their relationship, an account of the different printed editions of Burchard's work, a study of his presentation of the geography of the land, and a discussion of early maps showing knowledge of his work. Further chapters explore the churches visited by Burchard, and his use of scripture and other written sources. Burchard names over four hundred places; the identification of biblical places is central to his work. Consistency in the spelling of biblical place-names deriving from ancient Hebrew or Greek and handed down via Latin, Arabic, and through many biblical translations in different languages, is well-nigh impossible. This book includes a list of the Latin names used by Burchard, together with their English equivalents as commonly used by modern scholars, and also as found in the historical maps of the Atlas of Israel (2nd edition, 1970). Palestine Grid coordinates have been added for ease of precise location on the map. Eight maps have been included to illustrate Burchard's knowledge of the Holy Land and the Egypt described in his final chapters.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999984849169,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999987732753,"sku":"NIN9780198789512","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198789513.jpg?v=1750940049"},{"product_id":"eadmer-of-canterbury-lives-and-miracles-of-saints-oda-dunstan-and-oswald-book-bernard-j-muir-9780199253807","title":"Eadmer of Canterbury: Lives and Miracles of Saints Oda, Dunstan, and Oswald","description":"This volume in Oxford Medieval Text contains Eadmer's Lives of Saints Oda, Dunstan, and Oswald, as well as the Miracles of Dunstan and Oswald. Eadmer of Canterbury (c.1060-c.1130), the secretary, confidant, and biographer of Saint Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury (1033-1109), was one of the most important historians and biographers in the period after the Norman Conquest. His works, written in Latin, look back constantly to the Anglo-Saxon past, while at the same time they accurately reflect the present-day realities of the wider European society into which England had been forcibly integrated. Manuscripts of his Lives of the Saints circulated widely in both in England and France, but apart from his Life of Anselm they have been little studied, and have remained largely untranslated. The works newly edited and translated in this edition provide many insights into the wider political history of the pre- and post-Conquest periods, as well as important evidence for the cults of the saints in Canterbury and Worcester.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000112546065,"sku":"NIN9780199253807","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52613787091217,"sku":"NLS9780199253807","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199253803.jpg?v=1750940341"},{"product_id":"letters-of-anselm-archbishop-of-canterbury-book-samu-niskanen-9780199697168","title":"Letters of Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury","description":"St Anselm (d. 1109) is the most interesting theologian and philosopher of his time. In many respects, his career encapsulates the principal intellectual, religious, and political developments of high medieval Europe. In 1060, Anselm took monastic vows at the abbey of Bec, a reformist community in Normandy, where he was soon promoted to the office of prior and subsequently elected abbot. In 1093 he was elected archbishop of Canterbury, and became a dynamic representative of the new papal claims for the freedom of the Church from the control of lay rulers. Throughout, he wrote theological and spiritual treatises which still resonate today. Anselm was also an avid letter-writer, and his correspondence is one of our best testimonies to an active, cosmopolitan, and cultured life in the Middle Ages. His almost 500 surviving letters represent the man. They are an acute witness to his mind and action, illuminating his monastic teaching, intellectual journey, leadership, and positions respective to rivalries within the church and between ecclesiastical and lay rulers. The first volume of this new critical edition of Anselm's letters comprises his correspondence, 148 letters, from his Norman years. The letters demonstrate at first-hand how he emerged as a respected monastic leader, a distinguished author, and a powerful influence in Normandy with networks in France and England. The present volume includes a new critical edition, established from almost thirty manuscripts, and an English translation of the letters from Anselm's Norman years. A detailed commentary accompanies the text. The critical apparatus provides a means of studying the letters' reception up to c. 1140. The introduction comprises a systematic analysis of the text's transmission from Anselm and his followers to the present day, and a fresh account of his life before Canterbury.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000206491921,"sku":"NIN9780199697168","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52615811531025,"sku":"NLS9780199697168","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199697167.jpg?v=1751164714"},{"product_id":"philip-the-chancellor-and-eudes-of-chateauroux-book-nicole-beriou-9780198921394","title":"Philip the Chancellor and Eudes of Châteauroux","description":"Sermones Contra Hereticos presents an edition and translation of a group of mostly unpublished Latin sermons which were originally preached in the context of the Albigensian Crusade of 1226 and during the fight against heresy in northern France in 1231. The nine extant sermon texts are unique in that they can be connected to specific preaching events for which the identity of the preacher, the time, and location, as well as the audience are known. The sermons were originally preached before academics at the University of Paris, to King Louis VIII of France at the start of his crusade in Bourges, at a procession in Paris in aid of the crusade army at the siege of Avignon, for the recruitment of additional crusaders, and at an episcopal synod at Laon and to laypeople at Bruyères-et-Montbérault in an attempt to ward off the spread of heretical beliefs. These texts provide us with an opportunity to tie particular strands of crusade ideology and doctrine to specific moments of the crusade movement and to the church's endeavours to counteract heresies by intensifying pastoral preaching. In addition, the texts can tell us a great deal about the way in which oral preaching was recorded and about the differences between the surviving textual record and the historical spoken word.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51080915550481,"sku":"NIN9780198921394","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/019892139X.jpg?v=1750940187"},{"product_id":"annales-gandenses-annals-of-ghent-book-hilda-johnstone-9780198222118","title":"Annales Gandenses (Annals of Ghent)","description":"These annals, written by a Franciscan friar in Ghent c. 1308-10, describe events in the Low Countries between 1297 and 1310.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089258086673,"sku":"NIN9780198222118","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52337394123025,"sku":"NLS9780198222118","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198222114.jpg?v=1750939615"},{"product_id":"geoffrey-of-burton-life-and-miracles-of-st-modwenna-book-robert-bartlett-9780198206064","title":"Geoffrey of Burton: Life and Miracles of St Modwenna","description":"Geoffrey of Burton's Life and Miracles of St Modwenna (BHL 2097) is among the most substantial pieces of twelfth-century English hagiographic writing not previously to have appeared in print. It was produced by the abbot of Burton, where Modwenna's bones supposedly lay, in the period 1118-50, and consists of two parts of unequal length: the vita or Life proper, and the collection of miracle stories. The first part, forming about four-fifths of the total text, was based on an earlier Life by the Irish author Conchubranus, which Geoffrey revised and modified in style and substance. His creative rewriting of the Life throws much light on the Latinity, religious attitudes, and historical consciousness of an early twelfth-century Benedictine author. The second and shorter part of the text is made up of accounts of the miraculous cures and punishments connected with Modwenna's shrine at Burton. Geoffrey composed these stories on the basis of oral traditions and his own experience and they constitute a valuable source for the social and religious history of this part of England in the Norman period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51089255235857,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089258184977,"sku":"NIN9780198206064","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143709061393,"sku":"NLS9780198206064","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198206062.jpg?v=1750780353"},{"product_id":"goscelin-of-saint-bertin-the-hagiography-of-the-female-saints-of-ely-book-rosalind-c-love-9780198208150","title":"Goscelin of Saint-Bertin: The Hagiography of the Female Saints of Ely","description":"Goscelin, monk of Saint-Bertin, who came to England in the early 1060s, was one of the most prolific hagiographers of the Anglo-Saxon saints. William of Malmesbury described him as 'second to none since Bede in the celebration of the English saints'. Part of his career was spent in wandering exile, and one of the places Goscelin stayed briefly was Ely, who twelfth-century house-history portrays him working late at night on verses commemorating Ely's patroness, St Æthelfryth. By the late tenth century, the cult of Æthelfryth, the seventh-century virgin-queen whose two unconsummated marriages were recounted in Bede's Historia Ecclesiastica, had been combined with that of her sister Seaxburh, and of another supposed sister, Wihtburh (whose relics were 'translated' from East Dereham in Norfolk to Ely in 974). To this group were added Seaxburh's daughter Eormenhild, and Eormenhild's daughter Wærburh. A collection of the Lives of these female saints - some probably the work of Goscelin - is preserved in three twelfth-century Ely manuscripts.Taken together these texts offer a fascinating insight into Ely's view of the women venerated by the community and of its own past history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089258348817,"sku":"NIN9780198208150","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144962306321,"sku":"NLS9780198208150","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198208154.jpg?v=1750738297"},{"product_id":"gervase-of-tilbury-otia-imperialia-book-s-e-banks-9780198202882","title":"Gervase of Tilbury: Otia Imperialia","description":"This is the first English translation and the first modern critical edition of Gervase of Tilbury's Otia Imperialia. This is also the first completely new edition of the Latin since that of 1863. The author, Thomas of Marlborough, was an educated and much travelled man and his work was written not so much in terms of a chronicle but as a history of the lawsuit between the monastery at Evesham and the Bishop of Worcester over the Bishop's right to visit or inspect the community. The case began in England, but was finally taken to Rome and battled out with much legal argument before Pope Innocent III's curia. Much of the History is an eye-witness account. It shows the development of canon law at this period and illustrates aspects of England's relationship with the papacy during King John's reign, including the period of the Interdict. It is valuable too for the light it sheds into the mind of its author, a Benedictine monk, who had pursued a career at Oxford before entering the community. It tells us much about institutional pride and of the use of earlier archives to help the case. In telling the story of the community of Evesham from its foundation by St Ecgwine in the eighth century, Thomas incorporated the work of earlier Evesham historians including the twelfth-century Prior Dominic who was responsible for the Life and Miracles of St Ecgwine. Marlborough also produced a most vivid and personal account of the tyranny of the scandalous Abbot Norreis and of the sufferings of the convent. He went on to recount the return of law and order to the community at Evesham, and the election of a new abbot with whom he attended the Fourth Lateran Council. The edition concludes with the death of Thomas as abbot in 1236. The History provides a very pertinent example of the importance of the past in the interpretation of the present. Building on the past, Thomas exploited the evidence at his disposal in order to maintain and improve the rights that were won in the lawsuit. Few other chronicles or histories provide such an intense, inside view of a community, and are so frank.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089259659537,"sku":"NIN9780198204800","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52355121742097,"sku":"NLS9780198204800","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198204809.jpg?v=1750972827"},{"product_id":"monastic-constitutions-of-lanfranc-book-dom-david-knowles-9780199247981","title":"The Monastic Constitutions of Lanfranc","description":"The Monastic Constitutions of Lanfranc, archbishop of Canterbury between 1070 and 1089, has long been recognized as one of the most important historical sources for medieval monastic life. Brooke incorporates the historical scholarship of the last generation to offer further insight into and illumination of Lanfranc and the monastic world of the eleventh century. The Monastic Constitutions comprise a liturgical directory, a description of the functions of the leading officials of a monastery, and other fundamental regulations. Composed around 1077, they were intended for Lanfranc's own cathedral at Canterbury, for his nephew Paul's abbey of St Albans - and for any other houses which might observe them. The structure of life in a monastery of the traditional monasticism of the eleventh century has never been so clearly laid out as in this book, but the work also has its puzzles, which Christopher Brooke in this new edition seeks to elucidate.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51089279582481,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089283514641,"sku":"NIN9780199247981","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52344493867281,"sku":"NLS9780199247981","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199247986.jpg?v=1751323194"},{"product_id":"letters-of-adam-marsh-book-hugh-lawrence-9780199281794","title":"The Letters of Adam Marsh","description":"The first Franciscan friar to occupy a chair of theology at Oxford, Adam Marsh became famous both in England and on the continent as one of the foremost Biblical scholars of his time. He moved with equal assurance in the world of politics and the scholastic world of the university. Few men without official position can have had their advice so eagerly sought by so many in high places. He was counsellor to King Henry III and the queen, the spiritual director of Simon de Montfort and his wife, the devoted friend and counsellor of Robert Grosseteste, and consultant to the rulers of the Franciscan order. Scholars have long recognized the importance of his influence as mentor and spiritual activator of a circle of idealistic clergy and laymen, whose pressure for reform in secular government as well as in the Church culminated in the political upheavals of the years 1258-65. The collection of his letters, compiled by an unknown copyist within thirty years of his death, is perhaps the most illuminating and historically important series of private letters to be produced in England before the fifteenth century. The inclusion among his correspondents of such notable figures as Grosseteste, Simon de Montfort, Queen Eleanor, and Archbishop Boniface, make the collection a source of primary importance for the political history of England, the English Church, and the organization of Oxford University in the turbulent middle years of the thirteenth century. This critical edition, which supersedes the only previous edition published by J. S. Brewer in the Rolls Series nearly 150 years ago, is accompanied for the first time by an English translation. One batch of correspondence is included in this volume, along with an introduction that elucidates the role of Adam Marsh in the political and religious movements of the thirteenth century. The Life of St Oswald is the longest surviving work of Anglo-Saxon hagiography, and it is the principal source for much of our knowledge of tenth-century England, especially the monastic reform movement, the role of King Edgar, the murder of Edward king and Martyr, and the so-called 'anti-monastic reaction' (of which he is the unique witness). Much less is known about St Ecgwine, both by us and by Byrhtferth, but Byrhtferth's writing has exceptional value once again for the light it throws on tenth-century monasticism and the role of King Edgar in this process. Both Lives have been printed only once before, in the nineteenth century, in editions which are riddled with errors and which have misled scholarship for over a century. Neither work has ever been translated into English. The present edition includes facing-page translations, which will make these works accessible to a scholarly audience for the first time. Byrhtferth's Latin is unusually idiosyncratic and difficult, and was frequently misunderstood by the scribe who copied the unique manuscript in which the Lives are preserved. The texts are also accompanied by extensive notes, which explain the historical implications and the often impenetrable Latin. One of the principal features of the new edition is that corruption in the transmitted text has been emended where necessary, based on knowledge of Byrhtferth's Latin style (analysed, for example, in the EETS edition of Byrhtferth's Enchiridion, ed. Lapidge and Baker in 1994). A new edition of Byrhtferth's two saints' Lives has been long awaited, and will be indispensable to the study of Anglo-Saxon history and literature; the texts also throw considerable new light on the archaeology of Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical sites such as York, Worcester, Ramsey and Evesham.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51089311826193,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089315037457,"sku":"NIN9780199550784","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52427119362321,"sku":"NLS9780199550784","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199550786.jpg?v=1750940468"},{"product_id":"de-nugis-curialium-book-walter-map-9780198222361","title":"De Nugis Curialium","description":"Edited with a facing-page English translation from the Latin text by: Brooke, C. A great deal of our understanding of early medieval British history, from before and after the Norman Conquest, depends upon it. At a late stage in the production of the Chronica Chronicarum, John turned his hand to the writing of an abbreviated chronicle, which he called his Chronicula, and which survives in a single, autograph manuscript in Trinity College, Dublin. The Chronicula interacts with its parent text, the Chronica Chronicarum, in interesting ways: it reassembles the Chronica according to the reigns of the emperors, it splices together information from different annals and sometimes redrafts the Chronica's entries, thus providing an altered emphasis. The Chronicula also contains unique details (notably a set of poems and two long miracle episodes) and makes use of sources in ways that are not seen in the Chronica. In editing, translating, and providing a full introduction and commentary to the Chronicula for the first time, the volume provides both crucial access to twelfth-century historiographical material and unprecedented detail concerning the working methods of a twelfth-century monastic historian.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51168340312337,"sku":"NIN9780198916147","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52110637269265,"sku":"NGR9780198916147","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198916140.jpg?v=1776940218"},{"product_id":"anglo-scottish-relations-1174-1328-book-e-l-g-stones-9780198222156","title":"Anglo-Scottish Relations 1174-1328","description":"Anglo-Scottish Relations 1174-1328 Some Selected Documents","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51181017989393,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51181020610833,"sku":"NIN9780198222156","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52344001233169,"sku":"NLS9780198222156","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198222157.jpg?v=1751100754"},{"product_id":"william-of-malmesbury-gesta-pontificum-anglorum-the-history-of-the-english-bisho-book-r-thomson-9780199226610","title":"William of Malmesbury: Gesta Pontificum Anglorum, The History of the English Bishops","description":"Gesta Pontificum Anglorum (History of the English Bishops) is one of the most important medieval texts written c. 1125 by one of England's key historians of the period, William, Monk of Malmesbury. Conceived as a companion piece to his Gesta Regum Anglorum, this historical work was a unique enterprise, and the result is a substantial book, elegantly written, full of original information, and characterized by intelligent interpretation and judgement. This second volume by R. M. Thomson contains an introduction and detailed commentary to accompany the Latin text and translation of the work, appearing in Volume I. The introduction presents and analyzes the reasons behind the work - its structure, its main sources and programme of research, and its influence and significance. His major work, the Chronica maiora, covers the years 1376-1422, and is arguably the most important account of English history to be written in England at this time. Walsingham's text has never been published as a continuous whole. It is found in no fewer than three separate publications in the Rolls Series, and was printed from manuscripts whose exact identity was not then clearly understood. The nature of the Rolls Series publications, and the different versions of the chronicle have raised questions concerning the relationship of the various manuscripts of the Chronica maiora, and also of Walsingham's own involvement with the text. In this new edition these problems are considered and the Chronica maiora is shown to be predominantly the work of one man, Thomas Walsingham. Volume II of the St Albans Chronicle (1394-1422) now completes the edition. Drawing on the text in Bodley 462 and confirming the work of V. H. Galbraith, the editors make clear that the Annales Ricardi Secundi et Henrici Quarti (regarded in the Rolls Series as a separate chronicle) were an integral part of the Chronica maiora. They also argue that, while Walsingham's contribution as author in the later years was much smaller than in the years to 1393 (when he was without doubt the sole author), it is most likely that he supervised the whole work; and at times, as in the vivid and dramatic descriptions of the battles of Shrewsbury and of Agincourt, his own style is again apparent. The chronicle is of the greatest historical value for Richard II's last years and for his deposition and the accession of Henry IV. It is wholly in favour of the Lancastrian revolution of 1399 and remains 'Lancastrian' in tone to its end. It illustrates (with sympathy) Henry's difficulties in establishing the dynasty and includes unique material on his relations with his son. For Henry V's reign it provides valuable details of his Norman campaigns. Over both reigns St Albans' hatred of Lollardy and its interest in the healing of the Great Schism are apparent in the coverage given them. In the later years, the extent of the commentary on events decreases, but the information available at St Albans and written here continues to be of a high order. The chronicle remains absorbing right to its end.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51208306000145,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51208306688273,"sku":"NIN9780199253463","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680277066001,"sku":"NLS9780199253463","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199253463.jpg?v=1751101436"},{"product_id":"historia-pontificalis-book-john-of-salisbury-9780198222750","title":"The Historia Pontificalis","description":"Edited and translated by: Chibnall, Marjorie;","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51211574247697,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51211576639761,"sku":"NIN9780198222750","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403368034577,"sku":"NLS9780198222750","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198222750.jpg?v=1751227788"},{"product_id":"book-of-st-gilbert-book-saint-sempringham-9780198222606","title":"The Book of St Gilbert","description":"The Book of St Gilbert was written by a canon of the Order of Sempringham and is presented here in its first, full, critical edition.
