Where might it be found, and how might it be countered? How was the term used, and how effective a weapon was it in the assault on traditional religion'. The ease with which accusations of 'superstition' slipped into the language of Reformation debate has ensured that one of the most fought over terms in the history of early modern popular culture, especially religious culture, is also one of the most difficult to define. Offers a novel approach to the issue, based upon national and regional studies, and examinations of attitudes to prophets, ghosts, saints and demonology, alongside an analysis of Catholic responses to the Reformation and the apparent presence of 'superstition' in the reformed churches. Challenges the assumptions that Catholic piety was innately superstitious, while Protestantism was rational, and suggests that the early modern concept of 'superstition' needs more careful treatment by historians. Demands that the terminology and presuppositions of historical discourse on the Reformation be altered to remove lingering sectarian polemic.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49583419130129,"sku":"GOR005751440","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663288201489,"sku":"NLS9780719061585","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/071906158X.jpg?v=1772793902"},{"product_id":"catholic-communities-in-protestant-states-book-benjamin-kaplan-9780719079061","title":"Catholic Communities in Protestant States","description":"This volume compares the position of Catholic minorities in England and the Dutch Republic. Looking beyond the tales of persecution that have dominated traditional historiography, the contributors focus on the realities of Catholic existence. It examines ritual, material culture, international networks, and above all relations: between laity and clergy, men and women, Catholics and Protestants  By highlighting differences as well as similarities between the English and Dutch experiences, Catholic communities in Protestant states will help both undergraduate readers and specialists to rethink the history of Catholicism and the consequences of minority status for religious communities. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49729127481617,"sku":"NGR9780719079061","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585865904401,"sku":"NLS9780719079061","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0719079063.jpg?v=1763121341"},{"product_id":"malleus-maleficarum-and-the-construction-of-witchcraft-book-hans-broedel-9780719064418","title":"The 'Malleus Maleficarum' and the Construction of Witchcraft","description":"The Malleus is an important text and is frequently quoted by authors across a wide range of scholarly disciplines. Yet it also presents serious difficulties: it is difficult to understand out of context, and is not generally representative of late medieval learned thinking. This, the first book-length study of the original text in English, provides students and scholars with an introduction to this controversial work and to the conceptual word of its authors.  Like all witch-theorists, Institoris and Sprenger constructed their witch out of a constellation of pre-existing popular beliefs and learned traditions. Therefore, to understand the Malleus, one must also understand the contemporary and subsequent debates over the reality and nature of witches. This book argues that although the Malleus was a highly idiosyncratic text, its arguments were powerfully compelling and therefore remained influential long after alternatives were forgotten. Consequently, although focused on a single text, this study has important implications for fifteenth-century witchcraft theory.  This is a fascinating work on the Malleus Maleficarum and will be essential to students and academics of late medieval and early modern history, religion and witchcraft studies. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, Britain and France were on divergent political paths. For much of this time she ruled alongside her husband, King Philip II of Spain, forming a co-monarchy that put England at the heart of early modern Europe. In this book, Alexander Samson presents a bold reassessment of Mary and Philip's reign, rescuing them from the neglect they have suffered at the hands of generations of historians. The co-monarchy of Mary I and Philip II put England at the heart of early modern Europe. This positive reassessment of their joint reign counters a series of parochial, misogynist and anti-Catholic assumptions, correcting the many myths that have grown up around the marriage and explaining the reasons for its persistent marginalisation in the historiography of sixteenth-century England. Using new archival discoveries and original sources, the book argues for Mary as a great Catholic queen, while fleshing out Philip's important contributions as king of England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49741363937553,"sku":"NGR9781526160249","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52535008133393,"sku":"NLS9781526160249","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52750414479633,"sku":"NIN9781526160249","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53105103175953,"sku":"GOR013315528","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1526160242.jpg?v=1763117869"},{"product_id":"trials-of-the-self-book-elwin-hofman-9781526153142","title":"Trials of the Self","description":"Duellists, drunks and remorseful murderers populate Trials of the self, which highlights the criminal court as a space for publicising and negotiating models of the self. This volume explores the diverse range of ideas, institutions, and experiences early modern Europeans brought to bear in response to this biblical adage.    Do good unto all traces the concept and practice of charity across the four major early modern Christian confessions – Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist, and Anabaptist – and over a wide range of geographical areas from Scotland to Switzerland and the Spanish Atlantic World. By bringing such a diverse set of localised studies into concert for the first time, this volume exposes the many intersections and tensions that arose between and within communities as they attempted to translate the ideal of charity into practice. This comparative approach shifts the focus from binary definitions of ‘deserving’ and ‘undeserving’ poor or ‘Catholic’ and ‘Protestant’. Instead, Do good unto all charts a new course for the study of charity beyond institutional poor relief, where the matrix of individual ideas and experiences can be fully appreciated. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49744648896785,"sku":"NGR9781526162472","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51033980469521,"sku":"NIN9781526162472","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52689253957905,"sku":"NLS9781526162472","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1526162474.jpg?v=1772273290"},{"product_id":"great-favourite-book-patrick-williams-9780719051371","title":"The Great Favourite","description":"This is the first biography of the last major unknown figure in European history. Yet, although it is the party that extended the equal franchise, had the first woman MP to sit Parliament, and produced the first two women Prime Ministers, the UK Conservative Party has developed political roles for women that jar with feminist and progressive agendas. As a Stadholder and relative of the Prince of Orange, William Frederick was among the key players in a fragmented republican state system. This study offers a vivid analysis of his political strategies and reveals how unwritten codes of patronage guided his daily contacts and shaped his mental world.   As a patron at his court and as a client of the Prince of Orange, William Frederick developed distinctive patronage roles, appropriate to different social spheres. By assessing these different roles, Janssen provides a unique insight into the ways in which a seventeenth-century nobleman negotiated and articulated clientage, friendship and corruption in his life. These stories had very different authors with very different intentions. Over time the plethora of sources and interpretations faded away, leaving us with opposing canonical narratives. The Dutch and Spanish national myths were forged on the basis of two visions of the conflict: as a liberation war against cruel Spanish oppressors and as a glorious episode in the history of the Spanish Empire. This volume delves into the early, seemingly anecdotal stories of the war to map the great variety and interconnection of the narratives. Focusing on the Calvinists, this volume explores how the architecture, appearance and arrangement of places of worship were transformed by new theology and religious practice.   Based on original research and site visits, this book charts the impact of the Reformed faith across Europe, concentrating in particular on France, the Netherlands and Scotland. While in some areas a Calvinist Reformation led to the adaptation of existing buildings, elsewhere it resulted in the construction of new places of worship to innovative new designs. Reformed places of worship also reflected local considerations, vested interests and civic aspirations, often employing the latest styles and forms of decoration, and here provide a lens through which to examine not only the impact of the Reformation at a local level but also the character of the different religious settlements across Europe during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51371932549393,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51371933008145,"sku":"GOR014243391","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52407434281233,"sku":"NLS9780719054877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0719054877.jpg?v=1763127661"},{"product_id":"witchcraft-narratives-in-germany-book-alison-rowlands-9780719052590","title":"Witchcraft Narratives in Germany","description":"Witchcraft narratives in Germany explains why witch-trials failed to gain momentum and escalate into 'witch-crazes' in certain parts of early modern Europe.Centred on the German city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and its rural hinterland, the study draws on the city's rich records to uncover the social and psychological tensions underlying witchcraft accusations and confessions. The Wars of Religion witnessed serious challenges to the authority of the last Valois kings of France. Through detailed examination of the municipal and ecclesiastical records of Nantes, the author considers challenges to authority, its renegotiation and reconstruction in the city during the civil war period. The book surveys the socio-economic structures of the city, details the growth of the Protestant church, assesses the impact of sectarian conflict and the early counter reform movement on the Catholic Church, and evaluates the changing political relations of the city council with the population and with the French crown. Finally, Tingle focuses on the Catholic League rebellion against the king and the question of why Nantes held out against Henry IV longer than any other French city. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51450155434257,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51450155630865,"sku":"GOR004529636","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/071906726X.jpg?v=1763118760"},{"product_id":"fear-in-early-modern-society-book-naphy-william-g-9780719052057","title":"Fear in Early Modern Society","description":"Plagues, poisons and potions highlights one of the most fascinating aspects of the history of early modern plague. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries outbreaks of plague in and around the ancient Duchy of Savoy led to the arrests of many people who were accused of conspiring to spread the disease. Those implicated in the conspiracies were usually poor female migrants working in the plague hospitals under the direction of educated professional male barber-surgeons. These 'conspirators' were subsequently tried for spreading plague among leading and wealthy people from urban areas so that they could rob them while the afflicted homeowners were confined to their beds.In order to understand how this phenomenon developed and was regarded at the time, this study examines the courts, the judiciary and the part played by torture in the trials, which frequently concluded with the spectacular and gruesome execution of the suspects. The author goes on to consider the socio-economic conditions of the workers and in doing so highlights an early modern form of 'class warfare'. However, what makes this phenomenon especially interesting is that in an age dominated by superstition, religious strife and witch-hunts, the conspiracies were always given a moe rational explanation and motivation - profit.Both teachers and students of early modern history will be fascinated by this enlightening study into the fears of European society, the spread of the disease and the judicial procedures of the time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51457132658961,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51457132921105,"sku":"GOR010755743","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/071905205X.jpg?v=1751295808"},{"product_id":"visible-strangers-book-filomena-viviana-tagliaferri-9781526182050","title":"Visible Strangers","description":"Visible strangers is a collection of essays on the nature of cultural pluralism in the Mediterranean and the different ways in which this was managed in various cities during the early modern period. The book's nine chapters considers new case studies, where authors offer a diachronic view of the nature of the co-presence of minorities in different urban spaces, investigated through the lens of the fascinating relationship between visibility and identity. The considered case studies cover different areas of the Mediterranean space: the Adriatic, the Ottoman empire between Asia and Africa, the Italian and Iberian peninsulas, the island of Malta, at the centre of the Mare Nostrum and host to many of its influences. The analysis of the way cultural pluralism expressed itself wishes to overcome the bias induced by 'Mediterraneanism', that has led to the Mediterranean as an area of study hardening into a conceptual category.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51606467543313,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51606467772689,"sku":"NGR9781526182050","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52485436244241,"sku":"NLS9781526182050","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52751677358353,"sku":"NIN9781526182050","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/152618205X.jpg?v=1763121959"},{"product_id":"witchcraft-narratives-in-germany-book-alison-rowlands-9781526195722","title":"Witchcraft Narratives in Germany","description":"Witchcraft narratives in Germany explains why witch-trials failed to gain momentum and escalate into 'witch-crazes' in certain parts of early modern Europe. Richelieu's malice and the bias in histories based upon his memoirs justify another look at Luynes' career. This book sifts through the historical evidence to offer a new perspective on Luynes, arguing that his contributions to the early years of Louis XI's government have been insufficiently appreciated, and in the process throws light upon a dark, unpleasant corner of Richelieu's personality often ignored by historians. These elites regarded the assemblies as a challenge to their hereditary power over commoners. The king's government comprised seigneurial jurisdictions and venal offices. Scholars have in the past tended to group trials of Jews and conversos in Italy together. This book emphasises the fundamental disparity in Inquisitorial procedure, as well as the evidence examined, and argues that this was especially true in Modena where the secular authority did not have the power during the period in question to reject, or even significantly monitor, Inquisitorial trial procedure. It examines literary and non-literary works produced in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that express the dominant Spaniards' anxiety that socially mobile lowborns, Conversos (converted Jews), and Moriscos (converted Muslims) could impersonate and pass for 'pure' Christians like themselves. Previous scholarship has postulated that the social energy that led to the widespread marginalisation of non-elites had its roots in the nobility's rejection of sociocultural and genealogical heterogeneity. This book makes a key intervention in this discussion by proposing that there was a parallel phenomenon at play during early modernity: the anxiety of sameness. It argues that while conspicuous sociocultural and ethnic difference was certainly perturbing and unsettling, in some ways it was not as threatening to the dominant Spanish identity as the potential discovery of the arbitrariness that separated them from the undesirables of society - and therefore the recognition of fundamental sameness. The book provides fresh readings of the works of Cervantes, Lope de Vega and Quevedo, as well as analyses of lesser known works, such as joke books, treatises, genealogical catalogues and documentary accounts. This fascinating and accessible work will appeal to undergraduate students and seasoned scholars alike, in the fields of Hispanic studies, European history, cultural studies, Spanish literature and Spanish history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52433484153105,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52433484775697,"sku":"NLS9781784991203","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781784991203.jpg?v=1763123742"},{"product_id":"college-communities-abroad-book-liam-chambers-9781784995140","title":"College Communities Abroad","description":"This book repositions early modern Catholic abroad colleges in their interconnected regional, national and transnational contexts. On the basis of this unique source, this book portrays schools as focal points of a whole world of Lutheran learning outside of universities and courts, as places not just of education but of intense scholarship, and examines their significance for German culture.   Multi-confessional Germany was different from Catholic France and Protestant England in that its network of small cities fostered educational and cultural competition and made possible a much larger and socially open Republic. It examines ritual, material culture, international networks, and above all relations: between laity and clergy, men and women, Catholics and Protestants  By highlighting differences as well as similarities between the English and Dutch experiences, 'Catholic communities in Protestant states' will help both undergraduate readers and specialists to rethink the history of Catholicism and the consequences of minority status for religious communities. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52598422700305,"sku":"NLS9780719099939","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53490183209233,"sku":"NIN9780719099939","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780719099939.jpg?v=1772794352"},{"product_id":"english-republican-tradition-and-eighteenth-century-france-book-rachel-hammersley-9781784991371","title":"The English Republican tradition and eighteenth-century France","description":"The English republican tradition and eighteenth-century France offers the first full account of the role played by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English republican ideas in eighteenth-century France.  Challenging some of the dominant accounts of the republican tradition, it revises conventional understandings of what republicanism meant in both Britain and France during the eighteenth century, offering a distinctive trajectory as regards ancient and modern constructions and highlighting variety rather than homogeneity within the tradition. Hammersley thus offers a new and fascinating perspective on both the legacy of the English republican tradition and the origins and thought of the French Revolution. The book focuses on a series of case studies, featuring such colourful and influential characters as John Toland, Viscount Bolingbroke, John Wilkes and the Comte de Mirabeau.   This book will thus be of value to all those interested in the fields of intellectual history and the history of political thought, seventeenth and eighteenth-century British history, eighteenth-century French history and French Revolution studies. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52654622048529,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52654622212369,"sku":"NLS9781784991371","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781784991371.jpg?v=1772706649"},{"product_id":"jews-on-trial-book-katherine-aron-beller-9780719085192","title":"Jews on Trial","description":"This book explores the Papal Inquisition in Modena and the status of Jews in an early modern Italian duchy. This positive reassessment of their joint reign counters a series of parochial, misogynist and anti-Catholic assumptions, correcting the many myths that have grown up around the marriage and explaining the reasons for its persistent marginalisation in the historiography of sixteenth-century England. Using new archival discoveries and original sources, the book argues for Mary as a great Catholic queen, while fleshing out Philip's important contributions as king of England. It demonstrates the many positive achievements of this dynastic union in everything from culture, music and art to cartography, commerce and exploration. An important corrective for anyone interested in the history of Tudor England and Habsburg Spain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52670405869841,"sku":"NLS9781526142238","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781526142238.jpg?v=1763124465"},{"product_id":"orangism-in-the-dutch-republic-in-word-and-image-165075-book-jill-stern-9780719081163","title":"Orangism in the Dutch Republic in Word and Image, 1650–75","description":"This remarkable study represents a completely original presentation of the language and imagery used by the Orangists in the critical period in the mid-seventeenth century Netherlands as they sought the restoration of the stadholderate in the person of the young prince William III.  Stern argues that the Orangists had no desire for the prince to become a monarch, rather that they viewed the stadholderate as an essential component of the Dutch constitution, the Union of Utrecht, and fulfilling a key role as defender of the rights and privileges of the citizenry against an overwheening urban oligarchy. Source material is drawn not only from books and political pamphlets but also from contemporary drama, poetry, portraits, prints, and medals. This enables the author to examine the imagery used by the supporters of the House of Orange, in particular the symbols of rebirth and regeneration which were deployed to propagate the restoration of the stadholderate in the person of William III. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52670584226065,"sku":"NLS9780719081163","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780719081163.jpg?v=1763121126"},{"product_id":"morisco-knights-in-renaissance-spain-book-elizabeth-terry-roisin-9781526194244","title":"Morisco Knights in Renaissance Spain","description":"How does a Morisco enter the Spanish nobility? This book reveals the cultural strategies through which a family of converts from Islam to Christianity overcame limpieza de sangre laws, rose in social status, avoided King Philip III’s Morisco expulsions of 1609-14, and achieved a noble title. Drawing on archival sources from both Spain and Italy to re-create the original family archive, this book follows the Granada Venegas family from Granada, to Madrid, to the dusty Andalucían town of Campotéjar, of which they became Marquises, and finally to Italy. Their descendants would serve as Doges of Genoa in the eighteenth century. -- .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53372977479953,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53372978069777,"sku":"NGR9781526194244","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781526194244.jpg?v=1779961910"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/studies-in-early-modern-european-history-buchreihe.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
