The author takes up several topics in the systemic analysis of Judaism, its literature, and its theology. The reason for periodically collecting and publishing essays and reviews is to give them a second life, after they have served as lectures or as summaries of monographs or as free-standing articles or as expositions of Judaism in collections of comparative religions. This re-presentation serves a readership to whom the initial presentation in lectures or specialized journals or short-run monographs is inaccessible. Some of the essays furthermore provide a précis, for colleagues in kindred fields, of fully worked out monographs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49798929842449,"sku":"CIN0761857206G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332177129745,"sku":"NLS9780761857204","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0761857206.jpg?v=1754485612"},{"product_id":"rhetoric-of-innovation-book-aaron-d-panken-9780761831662","title":"The Rhetoric of Innovation","description":"A profound tension exists between the opposing tendencies of preservation and innovation in rabbinic legal literature. The rabbis made tremendous attempts to safeguard traditions handed down to them from prior generations in the face of significant new challenges. At the same time, these creative religious thinkers boldly invented new practices (or altered old ones) to fit shifting circumstances, designing and utilizing a rich rhetorical vocabulary to allow such necessary innovation.  Through critical examination of more than 1,000 occurrences of terms depicting legal innovation, this study maps the contours of legal change reported during the rabbinic period. The Rhetoric of Innovation examines temporal clusters of statements and actions attributed to authority figures in the Tannaitic and Amoraic periods, also reviewing the geographic distribution of these words and their divergent usages in documents edited in Roman Palestine and Babylonia. It also provides significant insight into rabbinic philosophies of legal change, through exploring the various rationales deemed acceptable within the rabbinic corpus. In this respect the book carries a relevant message for modern Jewish life in its consideration of the history of appropriate boundaries and reasons for legal change-questions that recur frequently in Jewish discourse today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50359627022609,"sku":"CIN0761831665G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332148261137,"sku":"NLS9780761831662","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0761831665.jpg?v=1754076624"},{"product_id":"mouth-of-the-lord-has-spoken-book-risto-nurmela-9780761834762","title":"The Mouth of the Lord has Spoken","description":"In recent years, the phenomenon of allusion has attracted increasing attention in scholarly study of the Hebrew Bible. The Mouth of the Lord Has Spoken is a detailed and comprehensive analysis of allusions in Isaiah 40-66. Author Risto Nurmela explores how allusions are identified through verbal similarities in biblical passages and how this information is used to prove that the similarities are the result of literary dependence. This work independently scrutinizes the verbal similarities between Isaiah 40-55 and the rest of the Hebrew Bible and Isaiah 56-66 and the rest of the Hebrew Bible. The Mouth of the Lord Has Spoken is an important contribution to the ongoing discussion of allusions in the Hebrew Bible.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50359662313745,"sku":"CIN0761834761G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363575173393,"sku":"CIN0761834761VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52451591749905,"sku":"NLS9780761834762","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0761834761.jpg?v=1759402248"},{"product_id":"pesiqta-rabbati-a-synoptic-edition-of-pesiqta-rabbati-based-upon-all-extant-manu-book-rivka-ulmer-9780761843344","title":"Pesiqta Rabbati: A Synoptic Edition of Pesiqta Rabbati Based Upon All Extant Manuscripts and the Editio Princeps","description":"This book is a reprint of the first publication of the complete manuscript of Pesiqta Rabbati, Volumes I-III (1997-2002), a major rabbinic work from the Land of Israel from the 5th-6th century. Gotsfeld abandoned a comfortable life in New York to live in Mandatory Palestine and conduct the MWOA's business. Gotsfeld was driven by a fervent dedication to Orthodox Zionism and modern education, especially for girls. Her innovations included the establishment of three vocational schools for adolescent girls and two large farm villages that offered religious instruction to girls and boys on an equal basis.  Every step of Gotsfeld's journey and leadership involved a struggle. To realize her goals, she had to hold her ground against Mizrachi men and women and centrists Zionists, such as Henrietta Szold. Organizational independence was crucial to Gotsfeld. The fundraising mechanism she set up in New York and her management of resources in Mandatory Palestine and Israel made the MWOA the most successful part of the Mizrachi movement. Through her leadership, she advanced the cause of religious Zionism in the United States and Israel.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363616821521,"sku":"CIN0761836993G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52119998824721,"sku":"NLS9780761836995","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52775932985617,"sku":"NIN9780761836995","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0761836993.jpg?v=1750978319"},{"product_id":"treasury-of-judaism-book-jacob-neusner-9780761840480","title":"The Treasury of Judaism","description":"This is the second volume of a set of anthologies that sets forth the statements of the formative canon of influential Rabbinic Judaism on three large topics: the calendar, the life cycle, and theology. Focusing on the seminal period of normative Judaism, the editor Jacob Neusner presents in three parts the teachings of Rabbinic Judaism in late antiquity, the first six centuries of the Common Era. The topical abstracts, which deal with the sacred calendar (volume one), events in the life cycle (volume two), and theological expositions (volume three), are presented in documentary sequence, from the Mishnah, ca. 200, through the Bavil or Talmud of Babylonia, ca. 600. This was the major reason why the death, burial, and translation of Moses to heaven in primarily Palestinian early Jewish tradition greatly influenced the descriptions of numerous accounts in the Gospels. The most significant examples of this are Jesus' burial by Joseph of Arimathea in Mark 15:42-46, and the narrative of the empty tomb in 16:1-8. Striking new insights into the background and significance of these episodes are gained here through an analysis of early Jewish materials.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363714535697,"sku":"CIN0761840877VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52450824814865,"sku":"NLS9780761840879","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0761840877.jpg?v=1754569460"},{"product_id":"rabbis-and-the-prophets-book-jacob-neusner-9780761854371","title":"The Rabbis and the Prophets","description":"The Prophets of Scripture are subverted by the Rabbis of the Talmud and Midrash. In the Rabbinic canon, the Prophets are represented as a miscellaneous mass of proof-texts, made up of one clause or sentence at a time. The Scripture's prophetic writings cited in clauses and phrases in the Rabbinic canon lose their integrity and cease to speak in fully coherent paragraphs and chapters. The same prophets, however, came to whole and coherent expression in other venues established by those same Rabbis. So the Rabbis of late antiquity took over writings from what they recognized as ancient times and of divine origin and they re-presented selections of those writings in accord with their own project's requirements, glossing clauses of the prophetic Scriptures but not whole, propositional discourses. This monograph shows how they did so. It portrays the formal patterns of the Rabbis' subversive glosses. Why impose the chaos of glosses on the orderly declaration of Scripture? It was to take possession of Scriptural prophecy that the Rabbinic authors imposed their characteristic forms and distinctive topics—-the characteristic categories and tasks and propositions. The Rabbinic canonical writings took over, imparting upon the received heritage of Scripture and tradition whatever they chose to treat as authoritative. They did with these selected compositions whatever they wanted. They Rabbinized Scripture in full awareness of how in the process they recast Scripture's own forms and purposes. The Rabbis were perfectly capable of recapitulating prophetic writings as coherent statements. This they did in providing for lections for Sabbaths and festivals.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50715320254737,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50715322089745,"sku":"CIN0761854371VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52451566911761,"sku":"NLS9780761854371","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0761854371.jpg?v=1754893257"},{"product_id":"essays-in-the-judaic-background-of-mark-11-12-14-20-21-15-23-luke-1-37-john-19-2-book-roger-david-aus-9780761866121","title":"Essays in the Judaic Background of Mark 11:12-14, 20-21; 15:23; Luke 1:37; John 19:28-30; and Acts 11:28","description":"These five essays deal with the influence of Judaic haggadah or lore, especially in the form of creative historiography or imaginative dramatization, on four enigmatic passages in the Gospels, and one in Acts. In this sourcebook, author Jacob Neusner derives from details of legal expositions some of the Halakhah's theological propositions, in order to show how normative laws of conduct express the narrative monotheism of the Torah. An introductory overview of the Halakhic theological program, seen through topical expositions of law, briefly compares Halakhic texts with Aggadic theological programs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52120023105809,"sku":"NLS9780761833840","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761833840.jpg?v=1757423442"},{"product_id":"praxis-and-parable-book-jacob-neusner-9780761833406","title":"Praxis and Parable","description":"Judaism's two native categories, narrative theology and law (also known as parable and praxis or Aggadah and Halakhah) form two distinct modes of discourse. The one expounds norms of attitude and belief, the other, norms of action and behavior. Each possesses its own modes of thought, topical program, and medium for expression. Joined together, they create a remarkably coherent statement. Any understanding of Rabbinic Judaism depends on a theory of how these two modes of thought and expression relate to form a single cogent system. In Praxis and Parable, author Jacob Neusner explores how that single topic the morality and law of the animal kingdom in the Rabbinic canon of the formative age, like all other ubiquitous topics encompassed in that canon, produces two distinct vocabularies of analysis. These distinct realms of thought and speech on the same subject yield two separate classifications of the order of nature and society. How these two mediums of expressions intersect and diverge in a single case permits the general characterization of the two Judaic modes of discourse. The general characterization of the interplay of Halakhah and Aggadah defines the interior dynamics of Rabbinic Judaism and forms the principal task of systemic analysis of that Judaism. In the Rabbinic manner, this book works from the case to the rule.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52120023564561,"sku":"NLS9780761833406","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761833406.jpg?v=1757423445"},{"product_id":"collected-essays-on-philosophy-and-on-judaism-book-marvin-fox-9780761825302","title":"Collected Essays on Philosophy and on Judaism","description":"The three volumes of Collected Essays on Philosophy and on Judaism by Marvin Fox (former President of the Association of Jewish Studies) present Fox's thoughts on the relationship between Judaism and Philosophy. And yet, it remains a closed book for the majority of Jews. Since the Talmud's composition does not follow the rules of Western writing, beginning learners are often thwarted in their first attempts to swim in the sea of Talmud. These modern learners often experience rabbinic literature as a sort of stream-of-consciousness writing that seems to wobble off-track quite frequently. Frustrated, these learners often give up. To understand the Babylonian Talmud (also called the Bavli) readers need to understand its process of composition and the fundamental differences between Western and rabbinic writing styles. Facing a vast corpus of facts, the heirs of the Mishnah answered this question by showing the cogency of data. They adopted analytical templates that transcended details and transformed the Mishnah's collection of topical expositions into a system of law. This was accomplished in the Bavli, the Talmud of Babylonia, which systematized and imposed an orderly program on the numerous subjects treated by the Mishnah. The Bavli follows a limited repertoire of analytical procedures, and so in parsing the law it often says the same thing about many things. Four templates govern, two form clear patterns from the data and two use various analytical arguments to transform these patterns into generalizations. Two types of analytical arguments, dialectical or moving and formal or static, join the exegetical analyses of clarification and contextualization. The systematization of the law proceeded in four steps. First, the words, phrases, principles, and authorities of the Mishnah were clarified in a uniform manner, following a rigid pattern. Second, the laws of the Mishnah were harmonized and shown to be coherent. Third, the laws were exhibited to showcase their dynamic quality, which was conveyed through disputation. Fourth, the dialectical argument extended through many topics. In this book, the author systematically defines and classifies these four analytical initiatives of the Bavli.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52120058298641,"sku":"NLS9780761833956","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761833956.jpg?v=1757423654"},{"product_id":"how-the-halakhah-unfolds-book-jacob-neusner-9780761833932","title":"How the Halakhah Unfolds","description":"In separate multi-volumed works, form-analytical English translations of the Mishnah, Tosefta, Yerushalmi, and Bavli have been set forth. Was the Garden of Eden a real place that can be found on a map? Was there a Flood? Did a Hebrew man rise to great power in Egypt? Were the Israelites slaves in Egypt? Did they escape from bondage and were they saved from the pursuing Egyptians? Did the prophets correctly predict many of the major events in Israelite history? Were Elijah and Elisha agents in a great assassination plot? Did Amos become famous because of an accurate forecast?  In thinking about the questions of biblical factuality, some embrace a rigid skepticism and are quick to dismiss the accuracy of the biblical narratives without weighing the evidence. They are content to read the Bible for its metaphorical and literary truths, forgetting that the Bible is based on the history of an ancient people. Fundamentalists, on the other hand, have the strong desire to find hard proof that the biblical facts are facts, only to be disappointed and frustrated. But is it reasonable to expect such proof? Archaeology and comparative texts must be examined for what they realistically can be asked to provide.   In a series of readable essays written in an engaging manner and a positive mode, author Benjamin Edidin Scolnic evaluates the biblical texts in the light of all the information we possess at this time. Scolnic asks the reader to join the ongoing dialogue between faith and history by carefully reviewing the textual and material evidence with an open mind. He does not so much seek to prove or disprove the Bible, but rather attempts to find middle ground through the exploration of its historical dimension.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52120064655633,"sku":"NLS9780761831471","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761831471.jpg?v=1757423694"},{"product_id":"renewal-reconnecting-soviet-jewry-to-the-soviet-people-book-anita-weiner-9780761824763","title":"Renewal: Reconnecting Soviet Jewry to the Soviet People","description":"Seven decades of severe Soviet cultural-religious suppression and two world wars had isolated and demolished the once flourishing Jewish communities behind the Iron Curtain. When the era of Glasnost and Perestroika presented an opportunity for world Jewry to reestablish its lost ties with the three of four million Jews still living throughout the former Soviet Republics, it was unknown whether there was any hope for some kind of Jewish community renewal. The story of how the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a voluntary, humanitarian organization supported by American Jewry, made its entry into the isolated, poverty-stricken world, is a dramatic one. Beginning with only a few highly motivated and experienced workers, contact was made through music, literature, food packages, and religious holiday celebrations. Local Jewish leadership emerged and was encouraged. Plans for community development through social, religious, educational and welfare services were made and implemented. The book offers scholarly insights into some Jewish thinkers-notably Martin Buber and Eugene Borowitz, some Jewish writers-in particular the poet Hayyim Nahman Bialik and the Yiddish author I.L. Peretz. The study also introduces more contemporary thinkers and writers such as the postmodernist Jacques Derrida, the contemporary Israeli novelist David Grossman, and the young Israeli poet Ilan Sheinfeld. While of scholarly interest, the ten chapter work has more general appeal as a way of conceiving Jewish living outside the restrictions of religion. One third of the book suggests a way of looking at God and theology as part of the process of living rather than as fixed realities. Another third explores how Jewish culture can be liberated from the restrictions of nationalism and parochialism. The final third focuses on a postmodern ethics of the self that emerges from face to face meetings with others. At issue is the origin of the comprehensive structure comprised by the Halakhic category-formations, by these topics and no others. Scripture forms the natural starting point for any inquiry into the origins of Judaism. So it is quite natural to treat Scripture as the base-line and the Halakhic category-formations as the variable when seeking the origin of the system. But what happens when, as in this project, we treat the system as the base-line and Scripture as the variable? By trees is meant episodic and free-standing statements, facts out of any larger context. Accordingly, the issue here is how the Talmud transforms isolated facts into cogent and coherent constructions: the forests formed by the Talmud's trees. What is at stake is simply stated: What ignores the program of the Bavli in its composition and in the formation of its composites belongs in other, different documents from the Bavli and we can reconstruct through an act of imagination in response to the characteristics of the secondary composites of the Bavli the traits of those other, different documents.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52120653496593,"sku":"NLS9780761847083","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761847083.jpg?v=1757426668"},{"product_id":"documentary-history-of-judaism-and-its-recent-interpreters-book-jacob-neusner-9780761849780","title":"The Documentary History of Judaism and Its Recent Interpreters","description":"The result for the history of Judaism of a documentary reading of the Rabbinic canonical sources illustrates the working of that hypothesis. It is the first major outcome of that hypothesis, but there are other implications, and a variety of new problems emerge from time to time as the work proceeds. In the recent past, Neusner has continued to explore special problems of the documentary hypothesis of the Rabbinic canon. At the same time, Neusner notes, others join in the discussion that have produced important and ambitious analyses of the thesis and its implications. Here, Neuser has collected some of the more ambitious ventures into the hypothesis and its current recapitulations. Neusner begins with the article written by Professor William Scott Green for the Encyclopaedia Judaica second edition, as Green places the documentary hypothesis into the context of Neusner's entire oeuvre. Neuser then reproduces what he regards as the single most successful venture of the documentary hypothesis, contrasting between the Mishnah's and the Talmuds' programs for the social order of Israel, the doctrines of economics, politics, and philosophy set forth in those documents, respectively. Then come the two foci of discourse: Halakhah or normative law and Aggadah or normative theology. Professors Bernard Jackson of the University of Manchester, England and Mayer Gruber of Ben Gurion University of the Negev treat the Halakhic program that Neusner has devised, and Kevin Edgecomb of the University of California, Berkeley, has produced a remarkable summary of the theological system Neusner discerns in the Aggadic documents. Neusner concludes with a review of a book by a critic of the documentary hypothesis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52121121227025,"sku":"NLS9780761849780","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761849780.jpg?v=1757429192"},{"product_id":"feeding-the-five-thousand-book-roger-david-aus-9780761851523","title":"Feeding the Five Thousand","description":"The story of Jesus feeding the five thousand is found in all four Gospels, and is told in two of them twice. Roger David Aus primarily explores the many facets of early Palestinian Judaism which inform the story, especially in regard to the miracle-worker Elisha. He describes four major motifs in the narrative, as well as the Markan and Johannine redaction. In addition, he analyzes the account's Semitic background, genre and historicity, and its part in a miracle collection.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52121134072081,"sku":"NLS9780761851523","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761851523.jpg?v=1757429284"},{"product_id":"alcimus-enemy-of-the-maccabees-book-benjamin-edidin-scolnic-9780761830443","title":"Alcimus, Enemy of the Maccabees","description":"Known mainly because of the holiday of Hanukkah, the Maccabean era is a fascinating and significant period of history that is vital to our understanding of the formation of Judaism. Yet even to those well versed in the history of the Jewish people, the name Alcimus, High Priest of Judaea in the years after Hanukkah, is basically unknown. Alcimus' enemy Judas Maccabaeus and his Hasmonean descendants considered Alcimus to be an evil man, and since the victors write history, the ancient sources express that prejudice. Most modern scholars, in attempting to reconstruct the history of that period, reflect that same attitude. Contrary to most moderns, this study evaluates Alcimus' heritage and loyalty to traditions in a much more positive manner. Alcimus, an ignored or denigrated figure in Jewish history, is restored as a leader who attempted to perpetuate his religion and his people.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52124998467857,"sku":"NLS9780761830443","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761830443.jpg?v=1757461102"},{"product_id":"chapters-in-the-formative-history-of-judaism-book-jacob-neusner-9780761833857","title":"Chapters in the Formative History of Judaism","description":"The documentary reading of the Rabbinic canon continues to create engaging questions and interesting problems for study. This collection of essays and book reviews represents two years of work from 2003 to 2005 focused on the Rabbinic canon. The collection is divided into four main groups. The first set of essays represents examples of historical and history-of-religion questions precipitated by the documentary perspective. The second group of essays focuses on the treatment of 56 B.C.E., 70 C.E., and 132-135 C.E. in successive canonical compilations. This section compares and contrasts Rabbinic and Christian writings on the same topic, Halakhic and Aggadic documents on the same topic, the theological description of a Rabbinic document, and various historical problems. The third set of essays deals with the history of law, and the fourth section includes several freestanding essays and six book reviews.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125081665809,"sku":"NLS9780761833857","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761833857.jpg?v=1757461886"},{"product_id":"jewish-studies-in-violence-book-roberta-rosenberg-farber-9780761836070","title":"Jewish Studies in Violence","description":"This collection of essays was compiled in response to the proliferation of violence throughout the modern world. They constitute a multi-disciplinary approach to the intersection of violence with Jewish life and thought. Examined are ancient and modern examples of violence from the perspectives of Jewish studies, philosophy, history, psychology and sociology. Topics include the philosophical and psychological dimensions of violence and terror in Israel; religious Zionism; an overview of Jewish Law; religious societies in antiquity; anti-Semitism among American workers during World War II; British anti-Semitic symbolism; violence in Canadian Jewish communal life; issues of conscription in Britain during war time; and spousal abuse. In conclusion, David Shatz provides a Jewish perspective on the events of 9\/11, followed by an examination of the halakhic response to the problem of evil by Moshe Sokol.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125208936721,"sku":"NLS9780761836070","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761836070.jpg?v=1757463251"},{"product_id":"wittgenstein-and-judaism-book-ranjit-chatterjee-9780820472560","title":"Wittgenstein and Judaism","description":"This radical new reading suggests that Wittgenstein is best understood as a covert Jewish thinker in times of lethal anti-Semitism. The argument first establishes that there was one Wittgenstein, not an early and a later. By looking afresh at the role of the Bible, God, Augustine, Otto Weininger, and science, among other things, in Wittgenstein's thought, Ranjit Chatterjee shows how well Wittgenstein matches with Jewish tradition because he had internalized talmudic and rabbinic modes of thought. An abundance of evidence is brought forward of Wittgenstein's Jewish self-identification from his writings and from remarks noted in conversations by his closest friends. Written in an engaging style, this powerful and unexpected understanding of Wittgenstein includes a chapter on his relation to postmodernism (Levinas and Derrida), a personal epilogue, an appendix on his descent, and a full bibliography.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125282435345,"sku":"NLS9780820472560","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52880785637649,"sku":"GOR014651938","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780820472560.jpg?v=1757463938"},{"product_id":"torah-and-the-halakhah-book-jacob-neusner-9780761825265","title":"The Torah and the Halakhah","description":"This is a study of the relationship between two cognate religious components of Judaism, the laws of the Pentateuch and the corpus of Halakhah set forth by the Mishnah-Tosefta-Yerushalmi-Bavli.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128068829457,"sku":"NLS9780761825265","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761825265.jpg?v=1757489422"},{"product_id":"benjamin-disraeli-book-bernard-glassman-9780761824725","title":"Benjamin Disraeli","description":"This book utilizes previously ignored or little known sources to provide new insights into how one of the most famous Jewish converts was viewed by the Jewish community he ignored and by the larger Christian world that would not accept him. Although Benjamin Disraeli was baptized prior to his thirteenth birthday, he could not escape his origins. Labeled as a 'Jew Scamp' by his detractors when he entered the political arena, he exploited his background to demonstrate the nobility of his ancient race and the superiority of his ancestral origins over those of his opponents. Rather than deny his roots, he chose to make them an integral part of his mystique. Though Disraeli's support of Jewish causes was problematic, his growing prominence attracted the attention of Anglo-Jewry who needed a hero to validate their own Englishness. Gradually, in spite of his baptism, they accepted him as a true representative of their faith and culture. Ultimately, a diverse group used and abused his achievements for their own purposes both during and especially after his lifetime. Zionists, Victorian racists, mid-twentieth century Nazis, Jewish apologists, and present day hate-mongers found abundant material in his novels to support their causes. This book shows how a myth can take on a life of its own in the collective memory of the Jewish people, as well as in the thought processes of a variety of anti-Semitic groups. Its fresh approach to the life and lore of a colorful Victorian figure also raises the issue of ethnic identity and minority acceptance in our pluralistic society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128483737873,"sku":"NLS9780761824725","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780761824725.jpg?v=1757491571"},{"product_id":"judaism-and-emotion-book-sarah-ross-9781433118722","title":"Judaism and Emotion","description":"Judaism and Emotion breaks with stereotypes that, until recently, branded Judaism as a rigid religion of laws and prohibitions. Instead, authors from different fields of research discuss the subject of Judaism and emotion from various scholarly perspectives; they present an understanding of Judaism that does not exclude spirituality and emotions from Jewish thought. In doing so, the contributions account for the relation between the representation of emotion and the actual emotions that living and breathing human beings feel in their everyday lives. While scholars of rabbinic studies and theology take a historical-critical and socio-historical approach to the subject, musicologists and scholars of religious studies focus on the overall research question of how the literary representations of emotion in Judaism are related to ritual and musical performances within Jewish worship. They describe in a more holistic fashion how Judaism serves to integrate various aspects of social life. In doing so, they examine the dynamic interrelationship between Judaism, cognition, and culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135636074769,"sku":"NLS9781433118722","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433118722.jpg?v=1757550104"},{"product_id":"sepharad-as-imagined-community-book-yudit-kornberg-greenberg-9781433131370","title":"Sepharad as Imagined Community","description":"This volume is a multidisciplinary contribution to Sephardic studies, including chapters by some of the best-known authorities in the field, interspersed with those of young scholars who have begun making their mark in current research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52136022835473,"sku":"NLS9781433131370","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433131370.jpg?v=1757552207"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/studies-in-judaism-buchreihe.oembed?page=7","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
