Accident and Emergency Medicine by Dg Ferguson
The Colour Guides series gives pictorial overviews of various specialities. Each volume presents some 55 topics as double page spreads. In each case the left hand page gives a synoptic account of the topic, wherever possible using a standard set of headlines (for example epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis.) This is a superb collection of largely clinical photographs.
David Ferguson is a retired Ontario conservation officer (CO) who invested 24 years of his career working in three diverse regions of the province with the Ministry of Natural Resources. And to be clear, being a CO is a vocation, a calling, - it is not just a 'job'. In that profession, he learned that successful law enforcement is an intense study of human behaviour. On the job, he met and dealt with a wide variety of people - a great many good, law abiding folks and then some others who landed on the wrong side of the law. Even the people who broke the law included an assortment of characters ranging from those who accidently 'slipped' over the line and maybe deserved a bit of a break, to outright bad guys you wouldn't want to turn your back on. Many of the latter group are also known to the police. Dave and his family, plus cats and dogs, have sailed Georgian Bay aboard a yawl that bears a remarkable resemblance to Water Baby, further validating the story-line in this book. They have sailed to, and visited the islands and coves detailed in these pages. As an avid reader of fiction himself, Dave knows that his career provided him with a wealth of human characteristics and a variety of geographic locations that could be woven into fictional characters and places in some exciting imaginary adventure stories. This one is his first. Dave lives with his wife Pat in northern Ontario, and when they are not on the road touring the continent, he can be found out on the lake in the summer, or feeding the wood stove in the cooler seasons while conjuring up his next story.
