Beirut 2020 by Charif Majdalani
At the start of the summer of 2020, in a Lebanon ruined by economic crisis and inflation, in an exhausted Beirut rising up for true democracy while the world was paralysed by the coronavirus, Charif Majdalani set about writing a journal. He intended to bear witness to this terrible, confusing time, to confront it with his experience, his reflections, and his emotions - and perhaps he also hoped to endure it through writing. This chronicle of suffocation and collapse collided on August 4 with the explosion of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate in the port of Beirut. From then on, it became a record of the catastrophe and the resulting outburst.
Charif Majdalani, born in Lebanon in 1960, is often compared to a Lebanese Proust. Majdalani lived in France from 1980 to 1993 and now teaches French literature at the Universitü¾Ž–”¼ Saint-Joseph in Beirut. The original French version of his novel Moving the Palace won the 2008 Franü¾¶”¼ois Mauriac Prize from the Acadü¾Ž–”¼mie Franü¾¶”¼aise as well as the Prix Tropiques. Edward Gauvin has received prizes and fellowships including those awarded by PEN America, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Fulbright program. His work has won the John Dryden Translation Prize and the Science Fiction & Fantasy Translation Award. He has translated over 200 graphic novels.
