Carousel Animals by Tobin Fraley
Carousel Animals takes you on a journey through the late 1800s to the early 1900s - a period when immigrants from Europe travelled to America to seek opportunities arising out of the industrial revolution. These immigrants used their skills as talented woodcarvers to introduce the merry-go-round and its dancing animals to America. Through 144 pages filled with over 100 colour illustrations of these carousel animals, along with related ephemera, the author sets out to show what fine artists these men were through their exquisite sculptures. The book devotes a separate chapter for each of the master carvers' works - allowing collectors to find specific works with ease.
After nearly 10 years as the owner of an antique carousel restoration studio in California, Fraley started Zephyr Press, published his first book, and created a line of limited edition carousel figures. After a short hiatus to write a book unassociated with carousels, he is back at it. Previous Books: The Carousel Animal (1983), Carousels: the Myth, the Magic and the Memories (1990), The Great American Carousel (1994), A Humbug Christmas (1998) Creator of the animated character, Roger Rabbit, featured in the Spielberg/Walt Disney film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", which won 4 academy awards. His ideas also inspired Toontown, a themed land at Disneyland, Tokyo's Disneyland and Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Wolf started his career as an advertising executive, but is now a full-time writer in Boston.
