Celtic Warriors by Wf Ritchie

The writings of several classical authors give valuable information about the impact of the 'barbarian tribes' on the Roman world, telling us about the stature of the warriors, their skills in chariotry and their bombastic manner, as well as offering vivid accounts of combats between champions. The evidence of archaeology, both from elaborate burials and from chance finds, shows the high standard of craftsmanship of Celtic arms. With both line drawings and photograpphs, the book illustrates the main categories of weapons - shields, swords, spears and helmets - as well as some of the more unusual equipment such as mail.
William F Ritchie graduated in Classics at Aberdeen University and taught in Stromness Academy, Orkney, and Daniel Stewart's College, Edinburgh. He was the Principal Teacher of Classics and later Depute Rector at Arbroath High School, Angus. He is a member of the Scottish Classics Group which produces the new Latin Reading Course, 'Ecce Romani'. Graham Ritchie was educated at Arbroath High School, Angus, and graduated in Prehistoric Archaeology at Edinburgh University, undertaking research in Celtic weapons. Since 1965 he has been on the staff of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, where he is now Head of Archaeology.
