So wrote Carlo Levi - doctor, painter, philosopher, and man of conscience - in describing the land and the people of Lucania, where he was banished in 1935, at the start of the Ethiopian war, because of his opposition to Fascism. Carlo Levi (1902-1975) was trained as a doctor but is best known as a writer. Among his other books are Words Are Stone, The Watch, and travel books on Russia, Germany, and Italy.
