The Christmas Eve Tree by Delia Huddy

A tender Christmas story with charming artwork by Emily Sutton, illustrator of Tiny. When the ugly little fir tree is taken to the city, no one wants to buy him; they prefer the big tall trees. But a homeless boy asks the shopkeeper if he can take the tree, and down by the river in a cardboard box, decorated with a few candles, the tree finds itself at the centre of a magical Christmas Eve it will never forget. A Christmas tale with a classic feel but a modern theme at its heart.

There’s a beautiful poignancy about the narrative that touches on the haves and have-nots, while the illustrations exude a beguiling elegance. Together, they create a thoughtful and ultimately triumphant tale about the power of small human kindnesses and the underdog who makes good. * My Little Style File *
The Christmas Eve Tree is a beautiful book to share at this time of year, exploring as it does what Christmas really means - especially for those who have nothing, not even a home, of their own. […] The story doesn't resolve the issue of the homeless boy as its focus is very much the tree itself and, through its growth and service, we are reminded of what Christmas is all about. […] Above all, The Christmas Eve Tree is a gorgeous reminder of the magical time of Christmas Eve, beautifully depicted in illustrations by Emily Sutton. * School Zone *
Giving pleasure to many is assuredly what this wonderful story will do, to what I hope will be its many readers and listeners, all year round too. * Red Reading Hub *
