He is the author of Blues and Trouble (St. Martin's Press), which earned the ASCAP-Deems Taylor award for music writing, and The Guide to Classic Recorded Jazz (University of Iowa Press), which won the ASCAP-Deems Taylor award for music writing. Martin's Press), for which a James Michener medal for fiction was given. He currently resides in New Orleans, where he is working on a novel.
