Civil War Letters by Bob Blaisdell

FOREWORD, I desire to acknowledge the help of my many friends in the compilation of this book, and in particular to Mr. Horton Harrild, Mr. Frederick Harrild, Mr. Arthur Waters and to Mr. Frank Glover and Mr. Edward Hicks, who have read the Proofs and taken the rough output of my in-experienced pen, and clothed it with what- ever style it may be found to possess. INTRODUCTION. The Work of Georgc Baxter, whether in the numcrous books he illustrated, the Music he embellished, or in the production of his beautiful Picture Prints, occopicd but a small corner in the World of Art, until il was brought to light by that pioneer Collector, Mr. Frederick Mkler, with the exhibition of his coIlection of Baxler Prints at Birmingham in 895. Further, George Baxter was practically unknown to the Collectors of Colour Prints, until about ten years ago, when Mr. C. T. Courtney Lewis gave us his indeiatigabIe researches into Baxtcrs works in that fine Volume, The Picture Printer. Prior to Mr. C. F. Courtney Lewis book, Baxter received but scant recognition in the usual books of reference, and in the small number of cases in, which he is mentioned, only a few lines are considered necessary to convey the information it was thought dsirable to give. Baxter and his works have for several years been to me a pleasing study ever since the day when I first came across his print known as The Large Bride in a portfolio in an Antiquarian Bookshop, which I purchased for, and now as I write many leading dealers ask and obtain as many pounds. Mr. C. T. Courtney J-ewis in his Picturc Printcr rightly says - There are many enigmas affecting Baxter and his work not yet solved.
