Contemporary Doorways by Catherine Slessor
Doorways are more than just functional divisions of space or security barriers. Throughout the ages, architects have explored the symbolic and aesthetic values of thresholds, doors and entrances. In the past architects, such as Philippe Starck and Norman Foster, have experimented with the door to create innovative interpretations of how we move from one space to another, or from exterior to interior. This text surveys over 50 examples from around the world, using colour photographs, architectural drawings to explore the range and inventiveness of recent designs.
London based author and journalist Catherine Slessor is Managing Editor of The Architectural Review. She has written widely on architecture, was a contributor to The Dictionary of Architects and Architecture (1991) and is the author of Eco Tech: Sustainable Architecture and High Technology (1997), Concrete Regionalism (2000) and Contemporary Staircases (Mitchell Beazley, 2000). In 1990 and 1997 she was named Architectural Journalist of the Year in the United Kingdom.
