Doves As Pets by Lolly Brown

Doves and pigeons, both members of the Columbidae family of birds, have enjoyed a close relationship with man for centuries. Although technically the same animal, doves are smaller than pigeons and greatly beloved for their gentle, quiet nature. This text, aimed at the novice dove keeper, introduces the reader to not just the basics of dove husbandry, but also offers insight into the emotional life of these intelligent and loyal creatures. Thriving in bonded pairs of any gender combination, doves also develop a deep affection for their human keepers and need a real relationship with their people. With a projected lifespan of 20 years for Ring Neck Doves and 25 years for Diamond Doves, taking one of these birds into your life is a serious commitment. Doves kept as pets should never be released into the wild. Doing so is a sure death sentence for the birds because they lack the ability to fend for themselves or to avoid death by predation. No pet should be acquired as an impulse purchase. This book aims to help interested readers decide if doves are the right companion birds to fit into their lives and will guide first time owners through the minimum requirements for housing, diet, and care. Be forewarned, however. You may start slow, as the author recommends, with only single pair of doves, and then fall so completely in love you wind up with a whole flock Dove personality, behavior, cages, temperament, communication, diet, nutrition, health, breeding, and more all covered

Lolly Brown, a lifelong animal enthusiast, is equally at ease writing about exotic creatures like the Mexican axolotl or giving dog owners sensible advise on kennel cough. Brown first became interested in fish and aquariums as a child, when her father surprised her with a 10-gallon aquarium. Within a few months, the father-daughter duo had upgraded to a 120-gallon tank and were fully absorbed in the complexities of tank population control. We had that go-big-or-go-home attitude that is widespread in the hobby, according to Brown. Now that I think about it, I remember what we did to Mama's living room!

Brown's interest throughout animals grew in college, where she took multiple field biology and wildlife classes that allowed her to observe various species in their natural settings. Because her only apartment companions were two hamsters, Hemingway and Leo (Tolstoy), she refers to this phase of her life as the rodent years. She also said she adopted a Guinea pig because she couldn't take the circumstances in the pet store. I was not at all prepared to care for Molly, and I had to learn quickly!

Then I discovered that I'd have to feed them live crickets. Brown first discovered capybaras, a South American creature that appears like a giant Guinea pig, while helping at her local zoo. Her interest in exotic pets was piqued as a result of the event, and she continues to research the subject with zeal. Brown, a freelance writer by trade, writes animal books for her own enjoyment and the education of her readers.

She is an outspoken advocate of animal rescue and welfare organizations, and she volunteers with programs that teach young children about pet care. Brown has her own menagerie, with a 180-gallon saltwater fish tank, a 20-year-old Scarlet Macaw, a Golden Retriever, and numerous tolerant cats. (She suggests that nice cages make good multi-species homes.) If I'm interested in a particular animal but haven't had any firsthand experience with it, I get some before I start writing, Brown adds. Every animal has their own unique viewpoint on the world and their place within it.

They all have different physical and emotional demands, as well as distinct personalities. These are concepts I'd like to grasp before attempting to convey them to my audience.
