Dr. Carlos Pestana, MD, PhD, is an emeritus surgeon at the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. Dr. Pestana graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in surgery and completed a 5-year surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic. He has garnered over 40 teaching medals and prizes for his outstanding performance in the classroom. He was a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners' Comprehensive Part II Committee, which established what is currently the clinical component of the USMLE Step 2 exam, in the early 1990s. Fluids and Electrolytes in the Surgical Patient, written by Dr. Pestana, has been translated into Spanish, Italian, and Greek.
