A Dwarf Kingdom by Nicolas Freeling
After a violent attack, the Castangs reaffirm their decision for Henri to retire and go to Biarritz to take stock of their situation. After the death of a friend, they find he has left his house to Vera. However the house has a legacy of conspiracy and corruption, which soon ensnares their family.
Nicolas Freeling was the creator of the van der Valk and Castang series, and was considered the most unique writer amongst 20th Century crime novelists. He died in 2003.
