EAST ASIAN MIRACLE ECONOMIC GROWTH & PUBLIC POLICY by World Group
This book examines the public policies of the eight high-performing Asian economies (HPAEs) from 1965 to 1990 that led to faster economic growth than any other part of the world. The countries discussed are Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Government policies fostered rapid capital accumulation, better schooling for the workforce, increased agricultural productivity, friendly regulatory laws, foreign investment, and targeting of key industries for growth. However, the book concludes that an important lesson for other developing countries is that most countries should not use government interventions in today's changing global economy.Following worldwide adoption of the Bretton Woods agreements, the World Bank was established in 1945. It provides crucial financial and technical help to underdeveloped countries all around the world. Education, health, agricultural and rural development, environmental protection, developing and enforcing rules, infrastructure development, governance, and the development of legal institutions are all priorities for the organization. The World Bank is made up of two distinct development institutions, both of which are owned by the World Bank's 185 member countries. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) works with middle-income and creditworthy poor countries, while the International Development Association (IDA) works with the world's poorest countries.
