The Elements of Music by Geoff Stray

A beautifully illustrated pocket guide to the principles and theories of music.

What is the secret code behind so many musical compositions? How do you substitute chords to create greater musical complexity? Why is music so good at playing with people's emotions? In this compact book, composer and pianist Jason Martineau presents the elements of music in clear and comprehensible terms. Packed with superb diagrams and a wealth of fascinating hard-to-come-by musical tips, this is a great primer, and an invaluable resource for novice and professional alike.

Dr. Jason Martineau has been engaged in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1995 as a composer, pianist, and instructor. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Academy of Art University faculty, and for the 2014-15 academic year, he was an adjunct faculty member of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He's also been a guest professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and since 2011, he's been writing a monthly piece for FSHN Magazine on the subject of love.
