A specially commissioned new translation of Turgenev's novel, which, with its controversial portrayal of Buzarov, the "nihilist" or "new man", aroused shock throughout Russian society when it was first published in 1862. The translator gained access to Turgenev's working manuscript.
Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright whose novel Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the major works of nineteenth-century fiction.
