Fighting Fires by Susan Kuklin

Colin's dad is a scientist who is always working in his lab, testing experiments, or creating new things. Colin--nicknamed the little professor--wants to be the next inventor and make something brand-new, just like his dad.

Colin needs help. He wants to ask his dad, but he's too busy and doesn't have time. Colin feels alone and wishes he had a friend. Then an idea sparks. He'll build his own friend. The little professor journeys through the neighborhood seeking supplies and receiving support from some nice people.

By collecting materials and getting help from interesting characters, Colin learns the true meaning of friendship.
