Freddie the Weaver by Mark Frankland

This is the true story of a mother's fight for her beloved adopted son who turned out to be handicapped, and of that child's fight to master his disability. The author's stepmother, Olivia, adopted Freddie soon after the child's birth in 1946, but when he was diagnosed as autistic, a condition little understood at the time, she undertook a pilgrimage through the medical world to find a cure for his condition. As a result Freddie underwent a series of painful and misguided treatments before finding inspired guidance in the Rudolf Steiner Camphill communities and understanding and affection among the doctors, nurses and social workers who cared for him.
