From Forecastle to Cabin: Seafarers' Voices 8 by Samuel Samuels
This is the autobiography of an American who ran away to sea at the age of 11 and charts his rise from the lowliest seaman to the command of his own ship and the occupation of the luxurious after cabin. Best known as captain of the Dreadnought in his later years, Samuel Samuels was often in danger both ashore and afloat, and his many adventures make excellent stories.
Samuels has inspired several works of fiction, but his own story is hard to beat for excitementSamuels diaries were first published in 1887 and his writing is full of the language and nautical terms if the era, many of which vanished with the sailing ships that e lives on They add a charm and romance which don't allow the reader to put the book down until the end.
