After a promising start as a prosperous and liberal democratic nation at the end of the nineteenth century, Argentina descended into instability and crisis. In Civilizing Argentina, Julia Rodriguez takes a sharply contrary view, demonstrating that Argentina's turn of fortune is not a mystery but rather the ironic consequence of schemes to civilize the nation in the name of progressivism, health, science, and public order.With new medical and scientific information arriving from Europe at the turn of the century, a powerful alliance developed among medical, scientific, and state authorities in Argentina. These elite forces promulgated a political culture based on a medical model that defined social problems such as poverty, vagrancy, crime, and street violence as illnesses to be treated through programs of social hygiene. They instituted programs to fingerprint immigrants, measure the bodies of prisoners, place wives who disobeyed their husbands in houses of deposit, and exclude or expel people deemed socially undesirable, including groups such as labor organizers and prostitutes. Such policies, Rodriguez argues, led to the destruction of the nation's liberal ideals and opened the way to the antidemocratic, authoritarian governments that came later in the twentieth century.
David Irving has written poetry, fairy tales, plays, short stories, essays, newspaper articles, magazine articles, and books. The Voice in the Stone is his first novel. In 2011 O-Books, an imprint of John Hunt Publishing, published his book The Protein Myth which has been endorsed by some of the top experts in the world in their respective fields. These include John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America and recipient of the Rachel Carson Award and the Peace Abbey's Courage of Conscience Award; Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease who President Clinton consulted in reversing his heart disease; and Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, author of The Politics of Cancer and recipient of the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel prize), the 1998 Project Censored Award (Alternative Pulitzer Prize), and the Albert Schweitzer Golden Grand Medal for Humanitarianism. David's articles have appeared on Cyrano's Journal, Thomas Paine's Corner, All-Creatures.org, Press Action, Radical Noesis, Dandelion Salad, The Animals Voice, New Dawn Magazine, Vegan Views, and other blogs and journals. He has been interviewed in the press and on several radio programs for his book The Protein Myth. He has also just completed a book titled The Cruel Science: Animal Research from Aristotle to the 21st Century. An accomplished musician, David is also a composer and has played French horn with ensembles like the Marlboro and Cabrillo music festivals, the San Francisco Ballet, and the San Francisco Opera. He was a member of the 7th Army Symphony, the Graz Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra (Austria), and the Oakland Symphony. David attended the New England Conservatory of Music, the Vienna Academy of Music, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University where he also earned his Master's in music composition. His compositions are performed in the United States and Europe. David has lived in Boston, Vienna and Graz (Austria), San Francisco, and New York City. He presently makes his home in the upper Catskill Mountain region of New York where he attends to and is attended by his three cats, Lewie-Lew, Goldie Boy, and Loonie. David was born in Kankakee, Illinois and grew up in Bluffton, Indiana. He has a twin brother, Darrel, who is a classical guitarist and an editor and author.
