From before the Enlightenment, individuals concerned for the poor and uneducated have endeavoured to offer learning opportunities of adults, but it was with the Enlightenment that real diversity came about as a number of organisations provided further, and in most cases innovative - educational opportunities. In this sense, adult education started out as a social movement. Throughout the 20th century much activity has been invested in making it a discipline worthy of university study and now much of it has indeed become institutionalized in Western Europe and America.
