A History of Spain by Simon Barton
Simon Barton provides an up-to-date analysis of the historical development of Spain from its origins to modern times. As Spain has become firmly integrated into the political and economic structures of the European Union, the long held notion that the country's "historical destiny" has been somehow out of step with those of its neighbours no longer seems valid. Barton probes the extent to which Spain should be regarded as an exceptional case and provides a clear and balanced account of its strikingly rich and diverse history.
Simon Barton teaches medieval Spanish history at the University of Exeter. He has published extensively in Spanish history - his books include The Aristocracy in Twelfth-Century Leon and Castile, which was awarded the Premio del Rey Prize for 1998 by the American Historical Association.
His latest book, A History of Spain (2003 ) in the Palgrave Essential Histories series, has sold over 2.000 copies since publication six months ago. It has already been hailed as a genuine tour-de-force (Roger Wright, Journal of Hispanic Research).
