How It Happens by Joyce E Young

Poetry. African & African American Studies. California Interest. HOW IT HAPENS explores the world with eyes wide open and a willingness to engage the light and dark of it all while inviting the reader to imagine life as a black woman in today's America. Young's debut collection unfolds in its own sweet time--from intimate portraits to mystical incantations, while examining the multifaceted and resilient lyric I at the center of life's contradictory forces--birth and death, desire and anger, memory and loss, resistance and acceptance.
Young, Joyce E.: - Joyce E. Young wears many hats: writer, teacher, daughter, sister, witness, rabblerouser, mentor, dancer, thinker, observer, activist, advocate, critic, and then some. She works to find a way through. She has been bringing poetry to classrooms, museums, bars, bookstores, afterschool programs, colleges, and streets for well over 20 years. She has been a Writers on Site fellow at The Oakland Museum and Oakland Public Library, a VONA Fellow, a member of Community of Writers at Squaw Valley, and writer in residence at Hedgebrook and Vermont Studio Center. She is a martial artist, yogini, and dancer. In addition to poetry, she writes fiction and non-fiction. Writing has been a life sustaining path; one that she continues to walk.
