Triumph and tragedy abound; from his capture and daring escape during the civil wars to his unshakeable commitment to Catholicism which led to his spectacular fall from power after only three years. The wider implications of his personal tragedy range from the Jacobite rebellions of the next sixty years to the growth of parliamentary power and the development of government in the American colonies.
John Callow is a lecturer at Goldsmith's College, University of London. He is the author of The Making of King James II (Sutton 2000), The King in Exile. James II: Warrior King and Saint (Sutton 2003), and (with Geoffrey Scarre)Witchcraft and Magic in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Europe (Palgrave 2001). He has also researched,written or presented several historical programmes for television and radio.
