Kappa by Ryunosuke Akutagawa

The Kappa is a creature from Japanese folklore described as a scaly, child-sized being with a face like a tiger and a sharp, pointed beak. In the hands of Ryunosuke Akutagawa, one man's journey to 'Kappaland' becomes the vehicle for a critique of Japanese life and customs in the tradition of Swift and Kafka.

Because of his extensive literary production in the medium, Ryunosuke Akutagawa is generally referred to as the Father of the Japanese Short Story. He was a contemporary of several key luminaries in modern Japanese literature, such as Soseki Natsume and Junichiro Tanizaki, and was born in 1892. His most renowned works include Rashomon (later turned into a film by Akira Kurozawa), A Nose, and In a Grove, and he is noted for his imaginative and amusing vocabulary, as well as his gloomy and satirical eye for social observation. His literary accomplishment was overshadowed by deep personal melancholy and a love affair.
