Lifelines by Duncan Forbes
A lively and versatile poet, Duncan Forbes can deal in modes both comic and elegiac with life's events. With his eye for detail and strong understanding of traditions, he approaches the enduring themes of poetry in fresh and contemporary ways. His prize-winning poems have featured in numerous anthologies and have been broadcast on radio here and in the USA. This selection provides a welcome introduction to the range of his work. His poems have been widely published and have won him a growing readership as well as a Gregory Award, the A.V. Bowen Lyric Poem Prize, the TLS/Blackwells Prize and a Stephen Spender Prize for poetry in translation. The poems here are drawn from five collections and span nearly forty years.
'Wise, witty and sophisticated.. Duncan Forbes writes civilised poetry in a civilised way.' Jim Burns in Ambit '... most of the 35 poems in Public & Confidential radiate intelligence, and I should hate anyone to misconstrue my admiration for them. The range of that intelligence is formidable, yet never self-regarding except in a mildly deprecatory manner... The ability to pack intensity into a short formal poem is a hallmark of his style, and the compassion seeps through without being underlined... Some of his work is deeply moving... I missed out on the first Forbes collection, but this one goes straight into my permanent poetry library.' Bill Turner in Poetry Review On Voice Mail: 'A multiplicity of voices characterizes this fine collection ... Forbes is a master of the striking image - in La Brea's tar pits, 'The eagle and the condor drown/In liquid nightfall underground'. And he has a strong sense of the elemental roots of the sacred ... Speaking the infinite in the everyday, the unique in the quotidian, and with wit too: that's some voice.' Stephen Elves in Connections 'His work offer[s] painterly observation, humour, emotional honesty and lively effects of sound, wordplay and meter. Forbes is also a painter producing vibrant pictures in the Colourist tradition' Sarah Johnstone in 'Literature on Line'
