From the PKK's founding in 1978 until his abduction on February 15, 1999, Abdullah Ocalan actively led the Kurdish liberation movement as its leader. He is the most significant political figure of the Kurdish freedom struggle and a leading strategist. Ocalan wrote more than ten volumes while imprisoned on Imrali Island, including The Political Philosophy of Abdullah Ocalan (Pluto, 2017) and Prison Writings, Volumes I and II (Pluto, 2007; 2011), which revolutionized Kurdish politics.
