Medical Microbiology by Michael Ford

Biomedical scientists are the foundation of modern healthcare, from cancer screening to diagnosing HIV, from blood transfusion for surgery to food poisoning and infection control. Without biomedical scientists, the diagnosis of disease, the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment, and research into the causes and cures of disease would not be possible. The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series is written to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today. It draws together essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a Biomedical Scientist may be exposed - from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science. Alongside volumes exploring specific biomedical themes and related laboratory diagnosis, an overarching Biomedical Science Practice volume gives a grounding in the professional and experimental skills with which any Biomedical Scientist must be equipped. The series * Understands the complex roles of Biomedical Scientists in the modern practice of medicine. * Understands the development needs of employers and the Profession. * Addresses the need for understanding of a range of fundamental sciences in the context of Biomedicine. * Places the theoretical aspects of Biomedical Science in their practical context. Medical Microbiology examines microbiology from the viewpoint of the biomedical scientist based in a microbiology laboratory. Adopting a holistic approach to the study of pathogens and their isolation and identification, it explains the basis of key laboratory techniques, as well as the scientific theory that underpins them. With a lens on the many branches of medical microbiology - including bacteriology, mycology, and virology - each process is covered in sufficient detail to ensure the reader understands how and why a result is generated, and the pitfalls of the processes involved. Online Resource Centre The Online Resource Centre to accompany Medical Microbiology features: For registered adopters of the book: .. Figures from the book, available to download For students: .. An interactive Digital Microscope, encouraging the exploration of tissue samples .. Self-assessment modules to help you to check and reinforce understanding of the basic science introduced in each volume .. Video podcasts including interviews with practicing biomedical scientists, and 'in the lab' footage showing biomedical science in practice
`As a laboratory professional I would choose to recommend this text over others for those students wanting a career in laboratory medicine' Dr Danilla Grando, Department of Biotechnology and Environmental Biology RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia `I would definitely include this in my reading list. I think it's an excellent read and entirely appropriate for scientists studying microbiology or practising it within the NHS. ' Dr Tony Worthington, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Microbiology, Aston University, Birmingham
Dr Michael Ford has worked in Microbiology for over 20 years and has a wide experience in all areas of a diagnostic service. Michael was appointed technical manager for the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation Trust in 2003. His main research area is in bacterial identification, which has resulted in a number of publications, and two successful patents for the development of novel selective media. He has been a lecturer at Northumbria University for the past 10 years, and a member of the IBMS Scientific Advisory Panel for Microbiology since 2005. In 2007 Michael was appointed IBMS Deputy Chief Examiner.
