New Wolves by Steven Naifeh

The award-winning writer documents changing wildlife patternsThis is the hopeful story of the resurgence of a long-hunted animal that nearly disappeared from the planet. The Mexican wolves were reintroduced to the Blue Mountains a few years ago, and Bass' celebration of their revival is writing at its best. Bass' newest release, The Lives of Rocks, is creating new readers for this classic from 2001.This is a ballad of a book, a hymn to the gloriously defiant power of survival.--Publishers WeeklyEnthralling and brilliant. - Jim HarrisonRick Bass lives in Yaak Valley, Montana.
A lyrical narrative along the boundaries of nature essay, character portraiture and eco-philosophy.. Bass mines the layers of political, social, economic, cultural and ethical relevance with a unique poetic voice, and, in the end, it is the wolves who most vigorously capture his imagination and fascination. This is a ballad of a book, a hymn to the gloriously defiant power of survival that transcends the single issue this is its putative subject. --Publishers Weekly The New Wolves is an enthralling and brilliant book on the reintroduction of wolves in the American Southwest ... written out of the activist lineage of Edward Abbey and Douglas Peacock, it is especially passionate but with the novelist's eye for vivid details. --Jim Harrison, author of Legends of the Fall --In Bass's chest beats the heart of both the poet and hunter, he is lyrical and sentimental, and that rare combination whets a sharp edge on his prose. --Chicago Sun Times --What's exhilarating about Rick Bass's stories is that they show every hallmark of 'the natural'--that lucid, free-flowing particularly American talent whose voice we can hear in Twain, Fitzgerald, and Hemingway. --Chicago Tribune
Rick Bass was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on March 7, 1958. He earned a degree in geology in 1979 and worked as a petroleum geologist for several years. He lived in Mississippi for a number of years, where he started writing. He became part of the trend of Southern authors who wrote about the West. His works are concerned with the nature of the human heart and the heart of nature. His first short story collection won the PEN/Nelson Algren Award in 1988. His most recent collection is The Lives of Rocks. In an article for the Bloomsbury Review, John Murray wrote, Bass is characteristically Southwestern in independence, his restlessness, his humor, his vitality, his sunny outlook, his distrust of unchallenged authority, and his disclaim for affectation and pretense. He lives in Yaak Valley, Montana.
