Newman and His Age by Sheridan Gilley
John Henry Newman was one of the most fasinating and important figures of the nineteenth century. Charming, sensitive and difficult, he showed his intellectual greatness especially in his response to religious doubt. His life was one of passionate frienships and enmities. This book was acclaimed as the most scholarly and accessible introduction to Newman's life and thought when first published in 1990.
Gilley, Sheridan: - Sheridan Gilley is an Emeritus Reader in Theology at the University of Durham, an Honorary Fellow in Catholic History in its Catholic Studies Centre, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and past president (2010-2011) of the Ecclesiastical History Society. Author of many books, many on Newman, he has published more than two hundred articles on modern English and Irish and Christian history.
