A Pacifist's War by Frances Partridge
At the outset of the Second World War Ralph and Frances Partridge were both convinced pacifists. These extracts from Frances war diary present an intimate and vivid picture of their life at Ham Spray in Wiltshire , which was a refuge to a wide range of friends, including many of their fellow 'Bloomsberries', as well as a stream of refugees and the dispossessed. Frances's diaries give a candid, intimate picture of their domestic upheavals and rich intellectual life, while also noting her sharp observations about nature and world events.
Frances Partridge was born in Bedford Square, Bloomsbury, in 1900, one of six children of an architect. She was educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she read English and Moral Sciences. In 1933 she married Ralph Partridge. In addition to translating many books from French and Spanish and helping her husband to edit THE GREVILLE MEMOIRS, she is the author of MEMORIES and five other published volumes of diaries, EVERYTHING TO LOSE, HANGING ON, OTHER PEOPLE, GOOD COMPANY and LIFE REGAINED.
