Paolozzi Portraits by Robin Gibson

Over recent years the human figure and the head have assumed importance in the oeuvre of Paolozzi. Published for an exhibition celebrating two major recent commissions in this field this catalogue traces the development of portraiture and the use of heads in Paolozzi's work. The architect Richard Rogers is the subject of a head for the National Portrait Gallery which was seen in the exhibition for the first time. Also featured is the whole-length bronze "Portrait of the Artist as a Hephaestus", commissioned for London and Paris Property Group's new building at 34-36 High Holborn, London. In both cases, these exhibits are accompanied by documentation of all stages of work on the figure, including illustrations of drawings, maquettes, related works and photographs of the work "in situ". Also illustrated are a number of Paolozzi's sculptured heads and his repertory of casts of limbs, hands, feet and industrial detritus, which are incorporated into the final works. The catalogue contains a new essay on the theme of portraiture and self-portraiture in Paolozzi's work by Robin Spencer who is a friend of the sculptor and an authority on his work.
