The Pedagogy of Real Talk by Paul Hernandez
Use Real Talk to reach and inspire your struggling learners, with a step-by-step plan and illuminating case studies from a former at-risk student—now a nationally-acclaimed educator."Every effective teacher should have an arsenal of researched tools when working with the diverse populations entering today’s classroomThis book is an approach that will work with many kids in a positive, comfortable way."
-- Dano Beal, Teacher
"This book should be required reading for any educator (future, present, or past) who is dedicated to giving voice to those students who have become marginalized by our current educational practices and society as a whole. By creating a culture in which students feel safe exposing their own hopes and fears and discussing their realities, we have real opportunities to establish content and context connections that establish relevance for our students’ learning."
-- Rich Hall, Principal"Most of us really do care about our students, and especially our at-risk students. But we’re out of ideas for how to work with students that don’t want to be in school, don’t want to engage, won’t do the work—students that don’t want to learn. In this book, author Paul Hernandez gives caring teachers a useful tool for connecting with at-risk students and for reaffirming that, deep down, they really do want to learn, after all."
-- Scott Hollinger, University Professor and Instructional Coach"...This resource is both practical and useful. The focus of several chapters is on questioning the world where students design solutions to real local and global environmental problems. What better way to motivate a group of middle school students! If you currently have a Maker’s Space or are starting from scratch, this resource provides many divergent ideas which would fill every need, activity, space, and student..." -- NSTA Recommends, March 2015
"In this book, Hernandez, who was himself a student at risk, outlines an action plan called Real Talk. It is a practical methodology for teachers who seek to engage students in issues that are important to them and that reflect their own lives. The ultimate goal is for students to share their experiences with others. Because too many students have had bad experiences with misguided teachers, Hernandez (sociology, Central Michigan Univ.) argues that it is important for teachers to also share their personal experiences so students see them as human beings, not simply as authority figures. Hernandez works hard at making sure that Real Talk moves students toward addressing issues in the curriculum they need to learn. In his methodology, he stresses both structure and flexibility, pointing out the necessity to be responsive both to specific students and to the entire class. Throughout, Hernandez provides many real life stories from a range of teachers of various subjects; this is one of the book′s strengths. Another strength is the author′s style of freely discussing when he failed with certain students—and why. The author′s self-examination and desire to constantly improve his teaching will resonate with many teachers."
