It is December 1952. A wedding is being planned in April Grove, Portsmouth, and Jess and Frank Budd want to bring together all their friends and neighbours, both from April Grove itself and from Bridge End, where the family was evacuated during the Second World War. Lilian Harry grew up in Portsmouth and now lives in a village on the edge of Dartmoor with three ginger cats and a black and silver miniature schnauzer with a fan club bigger than that of her mistress. She has a son, a daughter and two grandchildren, and is a keen walker.
