Resistance by Owen Sheers
A chance to gain much needed resources . . . A group of highly trained, merciless soldiers . . . A half-completed ship on a trajectory to nowhere . . . A lone operative on familiar yet dangerous ground . . . Captain Scott and the crew of the Aurora have a chance to get everything they need to liberate their home world, but they may have to fight someone else's war first.Owen Sheers was born in Fiji in 1974 and raised in the Welsh town of Abergavenny. His debut collection of poems, The Blue Book (Seren, 2000), was short-listed for the Welsh Book of the Year and the Forward Prize Best First Collection 2001. He received an Eric Gregory Award and the 1999 Vogue Young Writer's Award. His debut literary work, The Dust Diaries (Faber, 2004), was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature's Ondaatje Award and won the Welsh Book of the Year 2005. He was named one of the Poetry Book Society's Twenty Future Generation Poets in 2004 after serving as Writer in Residence at the Wordsworth Trust. Skirrid Hill (Seren, 2005), Owen's second collection of poetry, earned the Somerset Maugham Award in 2006 and is a WJEC and AQA A level set text.
Old Vic, New Voices produced Unicorns, almost his one-man piece based on the life and poetry of wartime poet Keith Douglas. Resistance, Owen's first novel, has been translated into eight languages. The Water Diviner's Tale, an oratorio for children written with composer Rachel Portman, was performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms 2007. His piece Bomb Gone, describing Britain's thermonuclear experiments on Christmas Island, was included in Granta 101.
Now, Owen works as a Dorothy and Lewis B. The New York Public Library's Cullman Fellow.
