`It is sad that Gerald Abraham did not live to see the last volume published; but his guiding hand and scholarship mark it stronglyHis survey has a magisterial ease.' Times Literary Supplement
`The New Oxford History of Music is completed in a blaze of suitably Wagnerian glory with the publication of its missing link, the volume on Romanticism covering the years 1830 to 1890...there is plenty of food for thought here ...OUP is to be congratulated on completing the most satisfying history of music on offer.' Musical Times
