Ronald Searle's America by Matt Jones

This lavishly produced volume compiles drawings and illustrations by the legendary Ronald Searle that have been virtually unseen by the public since their original publication in the 1960s. During this golden age of illustrative reportage, Ronald Searle - an influence on historic figures as wide-ranging as Matt Groening, Pat Oliphant and John Lennon - was sent by American magazines such as Holiday and LIFE to far-flung and exotic locations. He would report back with a raft of drawings detailing his observations and experience in his trademark satirical and virtuoso style.

Before joining the Royal Engineers in 1939, Ronald Searle (1920-2011) studied for two years at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now Anglia Ruskin University). During his incarceration as a prisoner of war in Singapore and Thailand from 1942 until 1945, he cartooned. Searle's most well-known comics series, which ran from 1948 to 1959 and featured juvenile delinquent schoolgirls at the fictional school St.
