Scandinavian Crime Fiction by Paula Arvas
Crime writers from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) have become some of the most widely read authors of the 1990s and 2000s. Yet books by such authors as Henning Mankell, Liza Marklund, Karin Fossum, and Anne Holt have also tantalized readers, because many of them do not know the cultures of the Nordic countries. As the first study in English of Nordic crime fiction, "Scandinavian Crime Fiction" spells out the context into which Nordic crime fiction fits through thirteen articles on the history, aesthetics, and film and television adaptation of Nordic crime fiction.
"This volume consists of a series of clear-cut analyses, examining prevalent notions in Scandinavian crime fictionThe contributors participate admirably in defining the concept of 'Scandinavian' by focusing on historical and cultural aspects of proximity and differences within the Scandinavian region. The history and present transformations of Scandinavian police procedurals are mapped, the tendency to harsh social criticism is scrutinized, and widespread attitudes to gender and cultural politics are highlighted and discussed. Timely and highly informative, this anthology discusses why Scandinavian crime fiction has been so widely exported and which significant contributions in particular it has made to the popular genre. It will be a landmark text in the study of Scandinavian crime fiction and its social significance."--Gunhild Agger, Aalborg University, Denmark
