Shardik by Richard Adams

Shardik is a unique examination of mankind's universal thirst for divine manifestation, a compelling narrative of conflict, adventure, horror, and romance. Richard Adams' Watership Down was a #1 New York Times bestseller, a beautiful work of imagination, and an recognized modern masterpiece.Adams tells a different but as compelling story in Shardik, situated in a far-off mythical planet.Shardik is a sad fiction about the long-awaited reincarnation of the colossal bear Shardik and his appearance among the half-barbaric Ortelgan people.Shardik is a powerful, violent, and unpredictable character that alters the lives of everyone in the story.Kelderek the hunter, who loves and trusts the big bear, is swept up by destiny to become first a devotee and then a prophet, then a triumphant soldier, then the ruler of an empire and priest-king of Lord Shardik―Messenger of God―only to discover ever-deeper layers of meaning latent in his intense belief in the bear's divinity.
