SHIELD & STORM by

This work reveals the personal experiences of some 19 pilots, navigators and ground support staff in the gulf War, flying a variety of British Aerospace aircraft - Tornado GR-1, Tornado F-3, Jaguar and Harrier. This book is a collection of accounts from participants whose stories are told in their own words, from when they first heard of their deployment to the Gulf until the end of the hostilities. Their experience of arriving in foreign countries which were totally unprepared at the start to accommodate them, of establishing their own bases and modus operandi, of flying endless sorties and of coping with many pressures of modern air combat are all portrayed. The book doesn't question the rights or wrongs of the Gulf War, but presents the human story of some of the combatants. In so doing, it also highlights the underlying silmilarities between the American and British behaviour in war, which are often concealed by apparent differences. John Godden is the author of "Harrier: Ski Jump to Victory".
