McWilliam, Michael: - Sir Michael McWilliam's childhood was spent on a tea estate in Kenya. At Oxford he did research on the East African tea industry before a banking career with Standard Chartered and then as Director of SOAS. He was a member of the board of the Commonwealth Development Corporation (whose history he wrote), and chairman for many years of the Royal African Society and of the Royal Commonwealth Society. He was appointed KCMG in 1996. In retirement he resumed his interest in the Kenya tea industry.
