Iron Acquisition by the Genus Mycobacterium summarizes the early evidence for the necessity of iron in mycobacteria and the discovery of the mycobacterial siderophores mycobactin, carboxymycobactin, and exochelin. The structural characterization of the mycobacterial siderophores is described. The genes so far identified as essential for iron acquisition and maintenance of an infection by pathogenic mycobacteria are discussed. The potential role of siderocalin in iron gathering by M. tuberculosis is featured. Because new drugs for M. tuberculosis are needed, this brief also emphasizes the design of antibiotics that interfere with siderophore biosynthesis and the use of siderophore analogs and/or conjugates.

The DAWG team (a play on the initials of the group member's first names and the slang term for friends) Dwight, Aki, Wesley, and Greg have been forging and cementing their friendships since their early high-school days. Dwight and Wesley Pullen are siblings, born less than one year apart. Aki Jamal Durham met the Pullen brothers while he and Wesley were freshmen at Peabody High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Greg El came to know the brothers upon entering as a freshman into The Linsly School in West Virginia, where Dwight was a sophomore. They were later joined by Wesley at Linsly, who transferred there in his sophomore year. The four drew closer while in college. During that time, each of them participated in the INROADS college internship program, which brought the young men together at weekend trainings every summer. The DAWG team formed as a Master Mind group in 2006, at Greg's suggestion, and the exchange of positive energy, critical and caring feedback, and accountability has been invaluable to each individual member. The years they've served as members of each other's personal board of directors have aided each of them in overcoming personal failures, achieving professional goals, and enhancing the quality of their lives in ways and measures they could not have imagined. It was this new way of sharing with one another that lead to the creation of the Spider Web Philosophy and the collaboration of coauthoring this book. They are available for speaking engagements, corporate trainings, and consulting opportunities, demonstrating the power of purposeful relationships and how those relationships create self-sustaining growth in any environment, culture, or industry.
