Sumner-Gearing-Class Destroyers by Robert Sumrall

The U.S. Navy's Sumner-Gearing-class destroyers served as a standard for post-World War II destroyer design and development. This handsomely illustrated work traces the origins of the US Navy's Sumner-Gearing class destroyers through half a century of changing naval technology, showing the great advances made in ordnance, fire control and steam engineering. The destroyers served as a standard for post-World War II destroyer design and development. This classic work on WWII destroyers is now available again after being long out of print.
Robert Sumrall is a retired chief party officer with over forty years of service in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve. Sumrall served on eight different Sumner- and Gearing-class destroyers. After retiring from the Navy, he expanded his knowledge of naval architecture and marine engineering by working at the Newport News Shipbuilding and dry Dock Co. as well as two other marine engine manufacturers. In 1970, he became the curator of ship models at the United States Naval Academy Museum. He is also the author of Iowa-Class Battleships and has written numerous articles for Proceedings. He is now retired.
