Zusammenfassung

Interrogates the yearning of discontented children, imagined homes, strangers and histories, as the century draws to an end. The irreverent and ironic narrator asks: Who are the melancholy architects of the future and how do we measure value, as we sleepwalk across the rubble of demolished utopias.

Swallowing Geography by Deborah Levy

JK, the central figure of SWALLOWING GEOGRAPHY is a 'disenfranchised free spirit': 'She is the wanderer, bum, emigre, refugee, deportee, rambler, strolling player. Sometimes she would like to be a settler, but curiosity, grief and disaffection forbid it'. Deborah Levy's brilliant, precise and often surreal imagination has created a world for JK: Her raging mother, Lilian Strauss and their relationship; a holiday in the Canary Islands for JK where Trotsky and Lenin materialize and talk to her about themselves and the human condition. Meetings - with friends, with strangers - punctuate SWALLOWING GEOGRAPHY. A novel for our times.
Deborah Levy was born in 1959. She studied theatre at Dartington College of Arts; during 1989-1991 she was Fellow in Creative Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge. Her work includes Pax, 'pioneering writing that subverts the structure, style and content of our new drama' (City Limits), and Heresies for the Royal Shakespeare Company. She is the author of a book of poetry, An Amorous Discourse in the Suburbs of Hell, and a collection of short stories, Ophelia and the Great Idea. Of Beautiful Mutants, her first novel, the Observer commented: 'It throbs its way into the imagination like the unguided missile it decries.' Debora Levy lives in London.
